Need urgent help choosing new bass!

I didn’t find them bland but in my opinion they don’t have a very colored tone. I’ve seen some people call the electronics of the 700 series BBs to be bland also. Not I….

I believe I’ve reached a point where my current bass (a cheap Jackson P-bass) is starting to hold me back, and I’m looking to upgrade.

I play a wide range of musical styles, so I need a bass that can cover as much ground as possible at a solid level. That said, I gravitate most toward SVT-style rock tones, funk grooves, and slap bass. I'm looking for something that can be a long-term investment, potentially lasting a lifetime or at least several decades.

Right now, I’ve narrowed my choices down to these: Yamaha BB435/735 and TRBX505/605. My main dilemma is choosing between the two and deciding whether it's worth stretching my budget for the BB735 or TRBX605 instead of settling for the BB435 or TRBX505.

Above all, I prioritize playability and reliability. I’d love to hear from you all—do you think the 735 and 605 are worth the extra cost? And if so, which one would better suit my needs?

I have the TRBX605. It is phenomenal. Not a bad sound on it. It is worth the stretch as is the 735 which is probably a more traditional option

I've got the BB435 and TRBX605. Love them both....naturally the versatility of the 605 is greater using the eq and passive/active options, but the 435 sounds glorious. I've got through a lot of decent 5 string basses ( Fender, G&L, Warwick, custom builds, Ibanez, MTD, ESP etc)....always end up coming back to Yamaha

I'm glad you bumped this thread, since I've purchased a (used) BB734a since this was started. I have that and I had a TRBX-604 (that I've given to my son), and my opinion is that the 734a has much more interesting and varied sounds, although it's definitely noisier than the 604. I'm really enjoying the 734, but the 604 left me flat.

My son loves the 604, but he's really a guitar player, so what does he know?

In my opinion the TRBX 600 Series is a much cleaner & modern sounding instrument in comparison to the BB 700 Series. I can totally understand why a person might prefer one over the other. Me? I like both series….

I can see what you mean. I think of the TRBX 600 as neutral sounding, but clean is also a good descriptor. Once it's all mixed in with the band, I'm sure it doesn't make much difference. It was when I'm on my own, training or practicing, that I wanted a less neutral sound.

I’ve got a 4 and a 5 of each series. I think the point that you make about being in the mix versus solo is valid. I like both series but if I were forced to have to choose between the two, I’d go with the BB700. Fortunately, I don’t have to choose……

Gigged the 605 with an "old school" sounding rig recently, used it passive for the whole night and it sat in the mix beautifully.... surprised how such a supposedly "clean" sounding bass has so much character in the neck pickup. Put some Status Hotwires stainless steel strings on it and it really made a difference to the tone, much more character than my usual D'addario nickels. Likely going to try Elixirs on it next, as they sound incredible on the BB435
