The bass player needed instructions because he wasn't practicing at home and learning his parts. He wasn't that serious

i'm a little confused about the process, but you don't need all of that to rationalize the result.

i like it when we can all be on the same music page = then it feels like we're 'together'.

sounds like you feel guilty. that's understandable. but you're a veteran player, so buck it up and call it an "experience." good luck with your 'new' instrument!

I wasn't seeking any guidance on this forum .
I did what should have been done and it the way I chose.
Just a different experience for me .

I have never thought I was a band leader . Never have been. I play great bass and pretty good guitar.
We have a little band. 2 guitars ,Bass , Keyboards and Drums and a Singer.
I have been playing 2nd guitar.
The bass player has experience but he learns slow .
The other guitarst is really good ( we have played together off and on for 40 years ) and tells the bass what to play and the guy just doesn't get it.
He wasn't at rehearsal and I played bass and we got through 3 new songs pretty fast.
The band wants me to play bass.
The band leader hasn't told him yet and I was afraid that the BL was going to wait to just before we rehearsed again.
So I texted him and told him that they want me to take over the bass duties. That I was sorry and he is a nice guy.
I haven't heard back from him and I may not.
I have never done this before.

Sounds like a hot mess, but it’s done, move on, would bringing this guy back solve anything? If you clicked your heels and went back in time, he’d still be holding you back, and it sounds like he had no incentive to improve. Somebody had to be the ‘bad guy’, but unless he holds grudges, it will be forgotten. Maybe he had a lesson to learn. Is he in your social circle otherwise?

Cover tunes and he wasn't really doing his homework and just hoped he could jam. The guitar player was trying to show him the bass lines and it became apparent that he didn't know the notes on his instrument.
This went on for weeks.

This would reach breaking point pretty soon anyway. He must have known it wasn't working but if he didn't consider you the BL, then you've basically moved in on his position as far as he is concerned...and hard to argue.

That might not relay too well out in the wild.
You should have got concensus to do that from the band to tell him and not decide to do it yourself.
(not sure if this point was addressed anywhere)
