The Boss Bass Overdrive is a pretty versitile distortion pedal and inexpensive at that -- not as funky as a wah (or envelope filter if that is what you are into), but a nice introduction to bass pedals if you ask me.

I like the Boss gt-10b the 50b is also a good multi effects processor. I personally have a BNX3 and I love it. Does eveything every effect I ever needed should. Sure some stuff isn;t quiet perfect but the audience can;t tell when it comes through teh mix. The built in recording features are nice.

You can pick them up used for 100-200$ US.

I would say Bassballs.
It sounds like it would fit what you want to play, and they can be picked up for pretty cheap.
