New Backup: VM 70s J Squier or Classic Vibe J?

Which bass should I choose?

Hey everybody!:help:

I have a choice to get a backup bass just to jam on and I've got a choice between the Vintage Modified 70s Jazz Bass or the Classic Vibe 60s Jazz, both being Squiers, I've heard that the CV is a little more of an upgrade to the VM, but the VM just looks so damn good it's hard to choose, the CV is a little more expensive, not too badly though, I thought I better ask all of you first, since, I'm well new here, this is my first post. :D

I own the VM J bass now and I love it. The look of it first caught my eye and I was iffy about it when I started playing it in the store. But after the neck heated up and the growl started coming through I fell in love. I had some minor set up done to it (lowered the action, I had some really bad buzz around 12-14th fret on A, etc.) but now it plays like a dream. I'd throw new strings on it right away (I prefer Elixirs) but keep the old ones. If you're in a jam for strings, you have a perfectly good set of free ones. I can't help you with the Classic Vibe, but I'm more than satisfied with my Vintage Modified :)

I also don't like glossed necks, but the guy above this post made a good point, glossed necks can easily be fixed, but I'll have to play both to see what I like, the nearest GC has a VM i'll check that out, and a GC a bit farther away has a CV, but I've been on other forums and man am I getting mixed insights, I'll just have to see which one fits my needs

get the Classic Vibe. I owned a VM Jazz. Nice bass, but the Classic is a classy looking bass. I got very bored of the VM's looks after a while. Unless you get one with attractive grain in the body they tend to look a bit cheap. This isn't helped by the fact that the block markers are painted on.

Well to be fair, so are the markers on all the newer Geddys, too.

I've played a VM, but not a CV. The modified isn't bad. Its a tad heavy, and like has been addressed, unless you get a good woodgrain it can look horrid, and downright ugly. What I want to do? Buy both. Put the neck and the pickguard of the VM on the CV. But, im probably just going to get the CV and keep an eye out on the 'bay for a VM neck.

But personally, I like the CV, just not the pickguard and the bridge. Or headstock decal. But I can deal with all those.

I like my Classic Vibe 60s Jazz more than any of the Squier VM Jazzes I've played. The VM Jazzes are great basses and playing one at home is different from demoing one in a store, but I prefer how the CV feels and looks. It also sounds very nice. I thought I would have to replace the wiring with an active preamp (since it made such a big difference on my Fender 70s RI) but it sounds too good to mess with at all. I've considered doing the series/parallel mod but haven't gotten around to it. Otherwise, not a thing needs changed. Cosmetically, it's almost my ideal Jazz bass. If I could get a replica of the neck with block inlays then I'd be in Jazz bass Heaven.

You'd be well off with either but I adore the Classic Vibe.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think the VM and the CV have the same pickups and pots etc...

The big difference is the body wood and the fretboards. I will know soon enough if the two basses sound at all different as I will soon have a CV to A/B through my amp, same settings, same strings to compare.

That being said, the VM with the chromes sounds very good, with a kind of deeper, warmer tone than the CV did. The CV has much more of that Jazz bass zing, but that was with the stock strings in a shop....

I still suggest if one wants to buy either, or....play them both in a shop, side by each and then decide. Or buy em both as I am doing....

Both winners, both great basses...but a lot will depend on the ear of the player and the sound one wants to get out of a bass.

I've played the VM and loved it. Played a MIM and was like "meh". Honestly, the VM is a sweet feeling bass...the pups and pots will probably need to be replaced ASAP! Just don't dig the CV at all...that one just feels like a cheap MIM while the VM feels like a really nice jazz, just love the feel of the neck. I'm also partial to the natural/black look...awesome! Getting a MM with that same color scheme.

Maybe the same pots , but the VM has duncan designed pick ups:bassist:

I Have a Cv Jazz and a MIA 75 Jazz RI (I know apples and oranges as far as cost comparison) but they sound remarkably close to each other tone wise. I also had a VM jazz And did A/B the VM and the CV and the CV was clearly more old schoolk sounding more growl and deeper sounding than the VM.
