New Bass Build: Kinal MK5B Custom

What pickups for the new bass? I'm leaning toward a jazz bass with humcancelling pickups...

Just for the record I totally love Big Splits, but I'm going for a different sound on this particular axe. I've tried big splits with flat wounds and I can tell you it just does not do what the P pickup can do with flats... I'll probably use rounds most of the time on this one, but I want to be a want to get that tone if I ever need it.

I originally wanted wire similar to my Sadowsky. He uses .090" x .050". We went round and round about the wire (we also considered vintage wire and low/wide wire), but settled on the narrow/tall. I think Mike is going to dress it down lower than it comes, as this pic is before the shaping of the frets and edge of the fingerboard. The fret wire has honestly been the hardest decision in this build. No worries, it will be fine. The Sadowsky wire makes the notes more crisp and clear, and the intonation is pretty much spot on. I expect similar results here. Will Lee basses have the narrow/tall, so if it's good enough for him it should be fine for me. Besides, hundredths and thousandths of an inch are very small and subtle differences.

I have vintage frets on my Lakland too. They all have merits. I'm copping a little of the Sadowsky vibe with the tall/narrow frets. I like my Sadowsky better than the Lakland, but love the vintage tone. I want this bass to be the best of all worlds.

It will have a sunburst finish. The center will be natural, fading to a sienna (brownish red) color, fading to a transparent black edges with the alder sides completely black. The headstock will have a matching finish on the front, and the burled maple veneer on the back of the headstock and the sides will be natural as is the neck and fingerboard. The finish will a satin poly, fingerboard will have a satin nitro, and back of neck will be oiled. There will also be a ramp/thumb rest, and THG knobs.
