New bass weak pups...

Jazz bass pickups come in long and short versions cause Fender used different length pickups for the neck and bridge positions. There are a TON of replacement options. What sort of sound are you going for? Does the hum that comes from a single coil pickup bother you? Active pickups like many of the EMG models require a battery and replacing the pots as well (though the EMG stuff is pretty easy to install), do you have room for a battery? Are you capable of making room? Or would you want to pay to have a battery box put in? If you don't want the battery then you need to be looking at passive options (which again, there are a ton of them).

Good point about the rout. I put a pair of Fender 62s on a MIM JB and they had to do a slight rout on the bridge pickup rout to get it to fit.

Hello Talkbass!
I'm in need of some direction here. I just picked up a Squier Paranormal 54 jazz bass and I'm looking to upgrade the pups. The bass was wonderful right out of the box! But the pups are rather weak. I was thinking of maybe some EMG's but then again some Fender noiseless pups. Those are really the only two I've thought of recently.
If there's anyone here that has the same bass and also did a pup upgrade I would really appreciate some input and direction OR if anyone has any suggestions that also would be very much appreciated!

Thank you all in advance for your help!

Be safe and well everyone!

Peace! :)

Yeah - extra low output can be annoying.
Bartolini made some of their pickups that way on purpose and they actually sound great when used with their gain boosting preamp. But then I had a bass with those kind of Barts & no room for a pre and it just never quite worked for me.
I'm dealing with that with a Gretsch right now. I have to turn some amp gain knobs ALL the way up to try & enjoy that proprietary ThunderTron sound. I might eventually see if the TV Jones replacements work better. Not as many choices for that shape.
Fortunately that's not a problem for a J. Definitely less if the routs aren't original spec, but still probably more options than you can shake a stick at.
