New book to read

So I need a book to read, I really like anything give me some reccomendations

Most recent book I read was High Fidelity - Nick Hornby, the inspiration for the movie by the same name, but the book is actually based in London. It was an awesome read.

If you like Historical fiction, you might check out Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet. Not like his usual work really.

Another favorite of mine is Clive Barker's Imagica.

I also really enjoyed the Dark Tower Series by Stephen King.

or if you liked 1984, give a try to "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley

Slaughter House 5 of his was good as well, but my favorite Vonnegut book was Mother Night.

+1, and Breakfast of Champions... if you like the distopic high quality sorta scifi stuff, I would give P.K. Dick's Clans of the Alphane Moon, Ubik, or Flow My Tears the Policemand Said a read, too... all great books and fun reads.

+1. I also read Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad recently and really enjoyed it. Maybe Lord of the Flies by WIlliam Golding if you've never read it.

If you like that trippy dystopian stuff, check out Kazuo Ishiguro's "Never Let Me Go."

American Gods by Neil Gaiman. It's incredible. America is a nation of immigrants. When any immigrant came here, whatever their religion/superstition was, whoever/whatever they believed in had to be here.

So Odin and Thor and Loki and Freya and their crowd have been here since the first vikings got here. All the Russian, or Irish, or Native American legends are still true...even if nobody believes them any more.

Gods don't die. It's kind of a perk of the job that looks like less of a perk when it's been over a century that you've been forgotten.

So these leftover immortals are all over America. And they have to find something to do with themselves to pass the time. Odin is a conman. The Egyptian gods of the dead run a mortuary, in Cairo, Illinois, no less. Several fertility goddesses are prostituts.

And there comes a conflict with newer modern gods. The new gods aren't worshipped in churches as such. But becasue they do recieve so much attention from people that they effectively become de facto gods. New gods like: commerce, media, progress...

It's awesome. Just read it.

Almost anything by Paul Auster will be good. I'm especially fond of Moon Palace myself, but have enjoyed all his recent books quite a bit. And if you like dystopic sci-fi, like Orwell, I've heard good things about Margaret Atwood's Oryx and Crake. It's high on my to read list, but I haven't got around to reading it yet.

If you do read the Dark Tower, be patient when reading the first book. It's not indicative of the quality of the rest of the series. I almost didn't read any of the other books because I didn't like the first! But they get much better.

+1 Philip Dick was a fantastic author. "The World Jones Made" and "Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?", the book from which the movie "Blade Runner" was taken, are great.

How about Heinlein's "Stranger In A Strange Land"? I've read it several times...

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy... one of my all-time favorites, and sort of in line with what you've been reading lately.

SuperDuck, it's funny what you said about the Dark Tower stuff... I continued reading the series because of the first book, even though I didn't like the rest of the books as much.

SuperDuck, it's funny what you said about the Dark Tower stuff... I continued reading the series because of the first book, even though I didn't like the rest of the books as much.

Interesting! I can honestly say you're the first person I've talked with who has shared that opinion. Though, maybe I just need to talk to more people.

I got my copy autographed by Diz in the early 80s when his quartet (Ed Cherry, John Lee and Tommy Campbell) played in Athens GA.


SUMMERLAND was a nice read (Michael Chabon), I'm currently in two books - BLOWING HOT AND COLD which is kind of a history of jazz criticism and THE HOUSE THAT TRANE BUILT which is a history of IMPULSE Records.
