New Custom 5-string Fretless

I appreciate the comments...I was hoping former or current owners would at least chime in with their impressions or thoughts as well.

Have a great weekend in any case, and thanks for the nice words!

Jay

I'll chime in!
Nice looking bass and it's good that you are satisfied with it overall!
It sounds like customers still have to deal with the same issues when dealing with Dave - longer than advertised wait (he dealt with some health concerns and the death of his father during my build time, to be fair), rough finish work, fretboard flaws, routs that aren't as clean as they could be with a router...
I'm sure he has made progress and improvements in the two years since mine was made (I should hope).

A couple of questions -

I see you went with his standard body shape. Curious as to why you didn't take advantage of the fact that he'll build nearly ANY bodystyle you create? THAT was a BIG reason I went with him (and his price points, of course). Again, just curious.

Now that you have your bass, is there anything different you would have done or wish you had been clearer about with Dave?

Would you have him build another bass?

Mine's below (sorry it's out of focus. It's IN focus in real life!)

Jon

Thanks for looking at the thread and asking some questions!

As far as the shape goes....to be honest, I'm fairly old fashioned on the shape thing. I had actually asked (originally) for a bit wider body; however, my experience with my Dean Fretless (both concerning weight and shape) prompted me to go with a fairly streamlined body shape (both for playing ease as well as trying to keep the weight at a comfortable level). Another reason was the fact that after I ordered the bass, I joined Talkbass and started reading all the many (and varied) reviews of Dave's basses. I preferred to go with one of his standard designs in the hope that it would help with some of the finish and wood-working issues that seemed to be a common thread on this forum. Hope that all makes sense. I do love the way the shape came out on this guitar.

As far as reflection goes...I'm not sure. I originally ordered a fretted bass...switched it to fretless when I found myself defaulting to the Dean over any of my other basses. I really enjoy playing a fretless, so I decided that as this will most likely be my only "custom" guitar, I'd prefer to make it fretless. In many ways, the delay in finishing the bass actually helped me. I hope my original review didn't sound too negative in this regard. I didn't mind the wait...I would have hoped some of the small fit and finish things would have been more "perfect", but the bottom line is that a "hand-crafted" wood instrument is going to have some anomalies - if you look hard enough, you will find them. I might have foregone the extensive preamp option. I love the Bartolini pickups - and the selectable mid-frequency option is nice. On the other hand, a fairly flexible, well-voiced preamp such as the Sadowsky standard is probably an "easier-to-use" option. It's a small point - I do like the flexibility of this preamp at the end of the day. I debated long and hard about changing the type of bridge on the bass. I really wanted to select a Hipshot bridge (for ease of stringing, etc.) Now that all's said and done, I'm really glad I went with his "generic" bridge. It's a great bridge and the bass balances so well, I'm glad I didn't mess with the specs.

Would I have him build me another one? Hmmm...I don't know if my answer would be pertinent as I really am out of the market for basses. Once the Zachary medium-scale bass gets here, I will have 6 instruments - 2 fretless basses (one 4 and one 5 string); 2 G&L basses (L2K and JB-2 jazz bass); my first bass (18 year old Fender Power Jazz Special), and the medium scale Zachary. To answer your question, however, I probably would be fine with it...he seems to be improving (if the latest reviews here are accurate), and at the very least, most of the reviewers (other than Jeff Rader's ill-fated bass) at least concur on the fact that Dave's basses have a great sound.

I think that's the most important thing when all things are considered. That being said, I hope Dave continues to improve on his finishing skills and attention to small details. These things will enable him to expand his market and regain the reputation he seems to have once had.

I think it looks good. So, overall, you're happy with the bass?
Overall...yes. Obviously, I'm still learning the instrument, so I'll reserve the right to change my mind.

My issues with the B string are disappearing. It's very strange, but as the weeks go by the gold B string and the bass are really starting to work together nicely. The string is well-defined now, and I love the overall tone of the bass up and down all the strings.

Couple of other points:

- The standard gig bag (a Fender) that Dave sends with the basses does not impress me at all. The Warwick Rockbag (both deluxe and premium) has become my favorite type of gig bag. I'm going to probably sell the Fender bag here locally for a small amount of money and follow eBay or the classifieds here for another Rockbag.

- I'm really having to learn to play with a much lighter touch than I'm used to. This bass really responds to a much lighter left-hand touch - when played this way, the bass really starts to sing with a very unique and beautiful voice. It's actually forcing me to be a much more sensitive musician overall.

I have no real feelings towards DP one way or the other, but it's nice to see a thread about one of these basses that is honest (about both the pros and cons), concise and not filled with the usual venom we so regularly read here when discussing the bass line ........

The bass looks great, you seem to be really enjoying it, best of luck with it .......

I think a lot more useful information gets passed (and assimilated) when threads stay away from a ton of emotion. I do realize that's probably pretty hard if someone has been the recipient of a very flawed instrument that might be unplayable, however.

I am enjoying the bass...it played wonderfully again at church this morning, and it's definitely an eye-catcher as well. No, it's not perfect, and prospective buyers should know the issues so they have realistic expectations. I still owe some pictures to Kronos (I'll try to get them taken this evening).

Thanks for the nice post!

Not to hijack the thread but I'm very interested in how your Zach will turn out! I love looking his work at and READING his site - that guy's a riot! He has some fun with his designs and ideas, that's for sure!
Any due date?

Jon
I really don't know where I am in line right now. I do know I'm fairly close as he's been communicating how the bass is coming together in his mind. Alex is definitely consistent with his building in that he puts out almost exactly one instrument a month. Our project is a 32" scale vintage bass with very simple/elegant hardware (coupled with his incredible woodworking skills). If you've been on his site, you've no doubt taken some good looks at his pictures. I've not seen any other luthier take such high-definition, varied pictures of each and every instrument. For that reason I'm completely relaxed about the craftsmanship of my bass when it's finished. This will be his 4th bass and his 2nd 32" scale instrument - I'll definitely post it up when it's done.

As promised - here are a few problem area pictures:

First one is self-explanatory

Hard to see, but bit of something under finish on the board

Self-explanatory

rough saw marks, etc in the neck curve here - the oil finish is very smooth, and the paste wax is applied very well (satiny finish) - however, easily seen saw marks, etc.

Hard to see, but there are about 6 "line" marks on the side of the fingerboard here - looks like buffer sanding "dig-in" marks

That strap button pic looks like a bent screw/cracked horn waiting to happen.

+1 on that. If I were in your spot, I would probably have the button moved to the back of the horn and find a similar piece of wood to plug that hole.

Otherwise, the other problems don't seem to be too bad (except of course the fretboard radius if it causes playing issues).

The bass still looks beautiful, and you say it sounds beautiful...which IMO is the most important part.
