New EB Cobalt Flats?

I just got a set of Cobalt flats for my P bass 50-70-85-105. Overall they sound good for hour #1. Two issues - the G string won't intonate properly. It's at the end of the saddle screw and still flat at the 12th. I've made sure my witness points are set pretty well. The other is that there is a ton of silk on the ball end of the E. It extends probably 1/4" past the saddle which seems odd. Ball end silk on the other three strings ends before the saddle break point.

Are these things unusual? Any advice? I suppose I could cut some silk off the E but wanted to check whether this is normal before I do so.

I had a bum .045 G string in a new set of Cobalt flats last year, though mine had some nasty inharmonic tones going on (which did make intonation spotty for sure). I emailed EB about it and they sent me a replacement string. The replacement and the G string in the other set I've had were both perfect. The extra-long silk on the E isn't consistent with the few sets I've had. You might email their customer service about both of those issues, maybe they'll send you a replacement pack. Short of that at least the E string silk could likely be trimmed back without any issues.

Good suggestion, thanks sunbeast. Ill send em an email and see what they say.

I am liking these strings though. It’s actually odd to like a set of flats right out of the package.

I just change to eb 2813...sounds like dull roundwound in good ways.....you got warm sound and sustain.....
Cons.....idk just me or someone out there has the some problem.....i think it's rusty so easy ....so make sure you wash your hand and clean it after playing thay string

Honestly..... i am not recommend this string to player who have heavy-sweaty hand or always leave the bass expose on stage or any open environment most the time.

You are right.....i have to do extra cleaning with string cleaner after playing with this string...so far is manageable....but i dont know ......maybe one day i decide to use chrome or back to stainless steel flatwound

I’ve just put a set of 45-105 on my Godin Shifter Classic and I must say that I wasn’t expecting the Cobalts to be that bright! I really like their sound however as I’ve found roundwounds aren’t my thing (even if two of my basses have NPD). I’m used to the Chromes and even if I read often that they are brighter than, say Labella’s, the Cobalts are way much brighter.

I also have a set of GHS Precision flats on my Squier Jazz fretless and they sit just between the Cobalts and the Chromes in the tone department.

However, I was worried about the stories of some people here with broken strings. I had a few moments since yesterday when I heard some « ping » when tuning the D and G. Also noticed the stickiness…

I guess I could put a little bit of lead pencil in the nut slots.

So, EB cobalt flat fans:
has anyone tried the new Ernie Ball Slinky Flatwound short-scale sets (no. 2818, 45-65-85-105; no. 2817, 50-70-90-110) yet?

NAMM 2023: Ernie Ball announces Slinky Flatwound electric guitar strings and Flatwound Short-Scale bass strings

They're finally in stock, or a handful of days away from being so, at Sweetwater (1, 2), Thomann (1, 2), Bax Music (1, 2) and a number of French and Greek vendors.

I definitely plan to on one of my shorties! Unfortunately my main flatwound-equipped shorty is a Mustang so these apparently won’t be long enough (based on someone else’s research from a different thread on TB)…
