New ebay final value fees

I just sold a jazz bass body on ebay for $230 plus $20 shipping. Ebay too 22 bucks as final value fees! That's almost 10%, plus another 3% to Paypal, when did ebay hike the fees up so high!?! It was never this bad!

You have to read the messages they send you, it was announced a while ago that I think the new fees started around the 19th or so.
It's meant to prevent the people skirting the rules and charging nothing for the item and crazy shipping.
It's not right and I don't agree with the rules but, it just makes selling on TB make much more sense.

Yep, sold a Rick 330 yesterday and final value fee was $99.75.

How is this going to change people charging crazy shipping amounts? Anybody?

And, if the fees are 13% (let's say), how is that going to change much-other than a slight increase in the minimum bid amount from some sellers? (And sellers netting a few less bucks.)

They tell you all the fees.

You get worldwide exposure (and lets be honest, you'll get more hits on ebay than anywhere else).

Try selling something at a real auction, ebay fees wont feel that bad.

If you dont like the fees, dont use ebay, problem solved. I'll gladly pay a bit more for the exposure, ease of use and ability to be paid by CC etc.

This is really the problem. Ebay is pretty much the only game in town when it comes to online actions. Surely there are other online auction sites out there, but I can't think of any off the top of my head and most people can't either, so ebay is where everyone goes. If there was any sort of reasonable competition in the online auction space, Ebay would probably be more cautious with jacking up their fees.

I like being protected by Paypal... having global coverage........ it has a fantastic search engine.

The fees are a bit... unfortunately none of my pals have come up with a better auction site.

Craigslist isn't searchable for this many markets.

Correct. And its only a matter of time before somebody sees and opportunity and takes it. Ebay have a habit of buying out these sites before they can become strong competition, but sooner or later somebody will realise the potential of sticking at it and becoming a strong competitor of Ebay.

There are other options, at least over here that I know of. But I don't like the way they are run (ie Madbid).

Online auctions aren't the only way to sell things, local newspapers, craigslist, gumtree etc etc all have a large pull too.

What it comes down to is ebay is the best out there, if you want to use it, pay up the fees, if you don't want to pay the fees, sell it somewhere else. I always just see this as people complaining about having to pay for a service.

I was thinking about this the other day , I sold 85 things I think on TB in one year , its 20$ for the ability to sell here thats 23.5 cents per item to sell it , i way rather sell on TB even tho at times it takes alot longer to move something.

So it looks like they no longer have a fee cap? It used to be that $20 was the most they could take for a final value fee. This screwed over the little guy but was a good deal for someone selling more expensive items.

Craig's List isn't all that great but a physical sales paper that was very strong in western states is started to make a play for private sales via internet sales (recycler.com). Nothing special; it's fairly similar to CL but it does have a large and older following.
I simply won't put anything of value in eBay & I really don't like to buy there either. - Just too many scammers......I had some time waiting for my wife to get ready so I went through eBay looking for "unique" verbiage or "special" ways of phrasing things to disguise a problem or make them appear to be something, they were not.....I found at least a dozen in about 20 minutes.

On top of all the "buyer beware" nonsense and the $10,000 checks which "accidentally" get sent to you, they are RAISING their cut????? No way.
What's more I like to play the instrument before I buy it. Dumbest thing I've done in a long time was buy an instrument on description alone from eBay. I really am not that picky.....But this was a very bad joke on me. ("Fool me twice"....nope!)

Because of this:
Final value fees for auction-style format listings

9.0% of the item’s total cost to the buyer (less any sales tax) with a maximum charge of $100.00.

This means that the percentage applies to BOTH the cost of the item AND the shipping. So, that auction for a super cheap bass and outrageous shipping that was up a while back...not going to happen anymore.
