After many years..and years of being on the market, the latest upgrade to the Ipad has GarageBand upgrades.
These include a P bass, in the bass model section to choose from, so it now offers what a P bass could sound and feel like, and now in the amp section, eight new amp categories with four bass amps in each to use....so thirty two to choose from?????
The categories are, 60s combo, Classic Stack, DI Bright, DI Clean, DI Low, Edgy Bass, Generation Bass and Golden Fingers.
But the reality is it is the same four four bass amps in each category, just EQed different, so a patch that can be edited....and has be preset for you to start with in each category.
Having just tried all the patches i must admit it is good for what it is, and better than what we had, maybe some bass effect pedals next time. Three of them seem to be based on old Ampeg models of the past, please advise otherwise please, and one is a DI box with pre-sets to toggle through.
I recored via iRig connection, a cheap and good solution to record what i done.
Perviously recording meant setting up amps, mic up, and recording via the iRig mic adapter to use the phantom power option to record live bass.
Now i can sketch out tracks on the iPad, and replace the bass when i get the chance simply using the iRig straight into the iPad.
The P bass option is good, again we can use the virtual bass and play it in real time, or use and edit the presets. With the addition of the P bass we now have nine bass instruments to choose from, so five analogue instruments, and four electronic keyboard ones. Again we can record any preset instruments style, then change it to another but retain what we played.
So we can record the patterns of the P bass, then change the way it sounds by changing to another bass and the recorded line will now have the characteristics of the new choosing patch.
There is also a new drummer choice, so now you can pick and edit (to a degree) from a number of "Drum Styles played by virtual drummers.
So nine drummers are available, each with their own strengths and styles, from rock to jazz, pop to hip hop, and can be recorded and blended into recordings, or used as main track, to make a drum line or patten.
Again, though i am sad to say, the section with drum loops will not support any other time signature other than 4/4. So we still have to write in 4/4 then change the setting to either 3/4 or 6/8 via the settings.....this can create some interesting effects on patterns, and lots of editing.
So in all it is a good improvement to have the amps at long last, so hats off to Apple and their developers....but more can be done to make this a great sketch book tool for ideas.
