I've been doing a lot of SX modding recently. My personal favorite bass tonewise is my Lakland DJ4, but I've been enjoying short scales so much, that I've been trying to emulate the Lakland with my SJB75 short scale SX Jazz. Along the way, I got a couple of other shorties for fun.
Here is a quickly recorded soundclip of six basses. In no particular order listed here, they are
Fender Mustang stock pickups
SX SJB75 ash short scale jazz with Nordstrand NJ4's
Squier Bronco with DiMarzio ProTrack
SX SJB75 alder short scale jazz with Dimarzio Model J's
Lakland DJ4 (full scale)
SX SPB57 short scale with Nordstand NP4
Please don't get all scientific on me about recording levels, technique (mine sucks), whether or not a bat can tell the difference, etc. This is just for fun and I recorded it in my cold basement with slightly stiff fingers in one take (per bass).
I overdubbed me speaking the numbers 1-6 into the MP3 file if you guys want to try to guess. If the bass is a jazz, both pickups are on full and tone is wide open. My fingers are playing at a position between both pickups. If the bass is a P, the pickup is on full and the tone is wide open and I'm playing perhaps an inch toward the bridge from the pickup. The bass goes straight into a PreSonus FirePod into Garageband on a Mac with no effects, compression, etc.
So, what do you think of the tones and which is which? Do you think short scales really sound that floppy with too much fundamental emphasis (like what many people say)?
