david, you are so right! i do love that heritage grillcloth. but i admit i'd feel funny about not doing period correct grilles. still, if i just happened on some, i so would do it!
btw, the original grillcloth is long gone. probably should have mentioned that. so now it's just frames with some generic looking fender-y grillcloth on them (cheaped out, i know...whatever). i'm liking the idea of new frames and keeping the old ones, but i wonder how long i'll be able to keep them safe. i've done that before with stuff and it's disappeared.
