Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a longtime hack on guitar, piano and drums. I'm not great at any one thing, but I've enjoyed myself tremendously. My oldest son also plays guitar, and my daughter plays piano and is just learning drums for her fifth grade school band. I never run out of excuses to buy something at the music store when I'm spread that thin. 
I got thinking to myself that the logical thing for a guy like me to do is to take up another instrument.
Played bass for my junior high jazz band (close to 30 years ago), and I've always toyed with the idea of taking it back up.
Just recently my middle son (who has shown no particular interest in playing music), began to show some interest in playing the bass (his older brother plays the guitar). That was all the incentive I needed to cater to my own bass GAS.
Ordered a Squier CV 60's Precision in sonic blue that we just received yesterday. What a great bass. I know there are many Squier fans and detractors on this list. I will not get into the Squier vs Fender discussion except to say that the fretwork and feel of the neck on THIS particular bass rivals my Fender Custom Shop Strat. I will also say that I got very lucky ordering online. After ordering my bass, I stopped in at my local Guitar Center, and they had just gotten in a 60's CV in Fiesta Red. It was really terrible. Fret sprout that felt like 1/4", warped neck, and just an overall junky feel that was hard to describe. I was really regretting ordering my bass sight-unseen after that, but my fears were unfounded. Just a beautiful, well put-together bass.
That showed me that perhaps Squier's QC (and box store setups) leave something to be desired, but if you can find a good one, they can certainly be really nice.
