New Hartke 5500 Problem... I think

I had a old 3500 from late 80s, i have just retired.

I just got a 5500 And am a little worried there may be something wrong with it.

I have a P -bass with Will power pickups so quite hot output.

Setting either/both preamps below 9 o'clock its kinda ok, but not as clear as my old Mosfet 3500.

The preamps (both ) (active OR passive) distort on hard hitting the low E when they are set anything above 9.o'clock ( Compressor off , Flat EQ , Low/high flat) all at low volume. gradually increasing in Horrible distortion as you increase gain.

THis DOes NOt occur on the old amp and an LH500 I also have. On the old amp I can set the preamps about 2'oclock and then get a different obvious clipping distortion (nasty sound) .
The new amp does the same at about the same setting. the difference is from 9 o'clock to 2'o'clock there is a nasty (not good) distortion. The old amp is clean from 0 - 2 o'clock.

Ive pinged hartke (uk) and the store this was purchased from.

I really want a hartke amp for various reasons. I just need to know if this is the same with ALL new HA Amps.

Cheers...
