They’ve always been passive pickups from the beginning with a active preamp. They however have started offering in the last couple years a active/passive option in their preamps though which is a very nice upgrade.

Maybe that’s my mistake. All of my (3) Premium basses are active with a switch for passive. However the discrimination of the new ones specifically says “passive” next to each pickup description which was not there before, so I thought there was a change.
Active pickups aren't that common. I have Seymour Duncans that are active. They sound great but if the battery dies there's no passive option to get you through the gig.
Kudos to Ibanez. It's too bad more basses with a preamp don't work that way. If the battery dies you switch to passive mode and keep playing.
Likewise. I have an old Streamer with active pickups and a preamp bypass switch, which is great, but when the battery goes the pickups also go, no matter whether you bypass the preamp or not
When I got my Roscoe I was a bit dismayed that there's no active/passive switch. Luckily, the pickups still work without batteries, although at reduced volume.Likewise.
