I avoided active guitars and basses for a while, too. It was mainly the battery part. Who wants to change batteries on their bass? But... well you can't argue with sound. Especially not for the price.

But now that I got a versatile bass and I'm becoming a decent player, it seems like the music scene has really taken a big old rotten deathpoo and passed into the nether regions. Or maybe I'm just getting older...

Late to the party again. The fun wagon left ten minutes before I got here, and now it's Nazis and North Korea and Satan from here on out...

Yes, The long recession/period of austerity killed off a lot of the arts and also venues, but there are still playing opportunities out there and things are growing again. :)

Well I'll just have to be patient. Technically I could compromise and join a cover band or replace a bassist in a mediocre original band and just play what they want me to play... but I've tried that. I'm not going to give a crap about a band unless it feels like it's important... and playing 90s covers and/or bland stereotypical "indie rock" or stoner metal or whatever... I was a guitarist for a long time and I just happened to wind up being the main songwriter most of the time, and so I dunno if I was the greatest songwriter ever, but I do know that because of the songwriting experience, I absolutely cannot stand playing sub par songs. It's embarrassing and it's sad. It's not the technical elegance of the song... it's the atmosphere it's supposed to create. I listen to almost any genre because genre isn't something I consider too deeply, so some might say well hey you're just being picky about the music.... what because I don't want to drive an hour and a half into the nightmare that is Chicago just to work on songs that will never matter to anyone including me? Just for a chance to play live and get myself out there? Heck no, man. I would like to think I have integrity! Although I might be unknowingly a completely debauched facsimile... but the point is... maybe it's the fact that making music is so easy nowadays... no struggle, no conflict, nothing to overcome...except maybe its own hubris... I honestly think it's more than just the state of the economy. Perhaps the state of human consciousness on a global scale... ya know like hey we're supposed to be graduating to a higher spiritual vibration or something, when in fact I think we're just turning into glorified household appliances.

Update: Okay so I've been going a little nuts making sure this new bass of mine is perfect as it can be, and I came across something very annoying about the ATK 200, other than its heavy body which has taken a little bit of a toll on me as well. So it for some reason doesn't do this on all amps for some reason, but in talking to the tech guy at Sweetwater, he told me that this was a very common problem with Ibanez active pickup basses. Well for the first 3 weeks of owning it, I've been playing it at lower volumes since I'm not in a band situation right now, but once I decided to crank it, I discovered that the active pickups interacted very annoyingly with my amplifier, causing an unbearable constant electronic buzzing sound. I took it around, and found out that certain amps would interact this way and certain amps wouldn't, at least as far as I could tell. I didn't bother to shop around for an amp which played friendly with mine because it seemed like it would only behave at higher volumes with more expensive amplifiers. I am not looking to replace all my amps just to please this one bass.... and I'm wondering what the deal is? Why do active pickups, which are supposedly supposed (grammars?) to reduce noise, wind up sometimes creating way more noise than any passive pickups? Before you jump to simplest answers, I've already tried a bunch of different cables and all the pots and switches are clean sounding..... and the effect is definitely one which is caused by the proximity of the pickup to the amplifier. I don't quite understand it, but I cannot tolerate it or any more INSOLENNNNCCCCEEE!!!! from this ATK series bass guitar. I thought it was a brilliant bass for a decent price, but then I've had all these major and minor flaws in two basses of the same make, model, and year... and it really makes me frustrated. So after some sorrows, I've decided to return the bass.

I'm also wondering, should I get my refund and search around locally at non-chain guitar stores? Or should I take my chances with Sweetwater again and try and find my perfect bargain bass-ment deal online?

Im a amateur musician of 45 years and enjoying bass for the past 5 or 6 years.
In my opinion this site is by far the best for learning and socializing in the music industry.
I see you are looking for a P bass type bass. There's a black Peavey Fury in mint condition for $250 in TB classifieds. I would appreciate you purchasing it before I do. I just bought my 26th bass last week and my wife would not what to see another large box waiting under the car port any time soon. Also.
I have a question?
Do you have voice recognition software or do you just like typing?

Man nobody types anymore!? My hands work smarter than my face, as you cas see from the avatar!

I've played a couple of very pleasing Peaveys. It's something to consider. I like the J/P pickup combination on the NS-2 Spector I found...

I'm cornfused right now. One bass has betrayed my amplifiers so we're breaking up, and another pretty looking bass is calling my name.... and the unknown is also out there calling, saying "just wait a little longer and you'll find a better lover bass."

Oh and thanks for welcoming me again to everyone who has welcomed me. I may not have said that yet...
