Hi guys and gals,

My name is Sergio, I've been playing guitar for about 15 years, but just bought my first bass (Ibanez SR505). I love everything from extreme metal to prog, jazz and well-crafted pop. I also jog, hang out with my wonderful wife and cats, play videogames and watch TV series.

Favourite bass players? Too many to mention, but right now I can think of Jaco, Les Claypool, Victor Wooten, Billy Gould and Ryan Martinie.

You can search for and find answers to every conceivable(and inconceivable) question. If that fails, start a thread and someone, somewhere will provide information on the most specific, bizarre of subjects.

A great bunch of folks here. I find this to be the most informative, friendly and fun music site on the internet.

We play roots first, then the 5, then the 8th, then the correct 3 and 7. After that you'll figure out the rest. The box got me going, I've listed it below.

Major scale box showing scale degree
numbers and the root note on the 4th string.
……….Index...Middle..Ring….Little
G~~|---2---|-------|---3---|---4---| 1st string
D~~|---6---|-------|---7---|---8---|
A~~|---3---|---4---|-------|---5---|
E~~|-------|---R---|-------|---2---|4th string

Find the root in the first five frets, then if you want to add something....
From the root the 5 is always located up a string and over two frets.
From the root the 8 is always over the 5, same fret.
Yep the major 3 and 7 are shown in the box. If minor you flat the 3 or 7. You want to end up with a four note bass line in a 4/4 song. R-5-8-5 is kinda generic and fits most 4/4 songs. So would root on the first beat and the 5 on the 3rd beat.

That is enough to get you going - if - you know where the chords are in the song. If not Google these search words -- Chords, name of the song - and ole Google will find you some fake chord sheet music on most any song you may want. Yes fake chord is not exact. It gives you the lyrics and chords and you fake the rest. Most good ole boy bands will hand out fake chord to all members. Take your old guitar fake chord and play from that.
