New "organ" pedal - EHX B9

You don't need two things. It gives you the ability to split your signal though. Under normal circumstances you just use the 'organ' output which carries your mixed signal. The other output is just the dry signal.

Exactly---a lot of pedals have features like this.

That makes sense to me. I was just hoping to run it in my signal path and be able to go from normal tone to mixed tone at the punch of a button. I would have to use both outputs, and in my case, unfortunately, my Bose T1 mixer is maxed out as far as inputs go. I haven't given up though. There is always a way!

So, when you use just the organ output and you push the button, you get no signal, right? If that is the case, when I want to change to the organ sound, I manually reach down and turn off the dry volume and turn up the organ volume....Hmm......might work....

It still has a dry mix knob, doesn't it? Bypass = normal tone, set the dry knob to taste = mixed tone when turned on.

Yes, I believe that is correct. I was reading the manual again. Here is what is says:

BYPASS FOOTSWITCH
Press the BYPASS Footswitch to toggle the B9 between buffered Bypass and Effect mode. The status LED lights when in Effect mode.

I guess that means if you only use the organ output (in the signal chain) you will still be able to use both tones. Sorry for my confusion. I just wouldn't be using the dry output for anything.
 
So it may be a little early to ponder but where would you guys put this in an effects chain? It is a bit like a multi-effects unit after all.

I was thinking somewhere near the front given it's need to track. So maybe just after a compressor? Like where I put an octave?

I think that's pretty much what I'd do. It's basically substituting a B3 for your bass, so I'd put it very first thing, so you can benefit from reverb, chorus, phase etc on your B3. I suspect a compressor first might not be a good thing, that may, possibly, interfere with the key-click sound, which must derive from detecting attack from the bass sound, and a comp might interfere with that.

Hey - thanks for that. I had not thought about the key click issue. I think you are correct that dead first might be best.

I think a good general rule is that any "weird" effect needs to go early in the chain. Synth or emulation of another instrument probably wants the cleanest, most basic signal possible.
 
I was reading the manual today. I didn't realize you need two separate things to plug this pedal into. I was thinking that the bypassed signal would be your normal sound and when it was on, you could choose the mix of the two tones. I wanted to just run this in my signal path. Am I understanding how this works correctly. The main signal never shuts off? Still a great pedal, no doubt! Just might not work for me. Kinda bummed.

It's certainly a standard approach to have it work that way, but there's not much reassurance in the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] that that is what's happening. Also there's nothing to suggest it on the graphics on the pedal and the video always shows both jacks in use. The only clue that it might be the case you can use just one is the note near the end of the video that the two jack allow you to use separate amps if needed.
 
Note: It appears you can't turn off the leslie effect of the B9 (on presets 1-6, the B3 presets) you can only change the speed. So if you stacked this with another pedal you'd have two leslies.

But I wonder if you turn the mod control all the way down if that would equate to off, or nearly off.

I'm hoping that the mod knob all the way down has no modulation, but either way, a Leslie isn't the same thing as a chorus. A Hammond B3, etc. has chorus and vibrato on board plus you can run it through a Leslie.

Isn't a Leslie two speed, slow and fast, with no off?

This pedal, according to the voice on the video, has a 'built-in rotating speaker effect' so I would interpret that as them saying 'It's a Leslie' in a way that doesn't infringe on trademarks.

Looks like it's continuously variable on this pedal, I could be wrong though, it could easily be continuous on the latter presets, but a switch between off/slow/fast on the lower (B3) presets.

Also interestingly, while the video refers to "rotating speaker effect" on presets 1-6 the manual identifies the effect as "chorus" ... but at the end of the day, the name is just a label, doesn't change what our ears tell us.

These manuals are such crap. How about the CRAZY idea of actually providing some sample settings for each preset? I have no idea why effects manufacturers are so bad at making a manual for their creations. It would only help us use them to the best of their ability.

Seems fairly clear in the manual, to me anyway:
GETTING STARTED
Connect the supplied power adapter to the 9V power jack. Plug your instrument into the INPUT jack; connect your amp to the ORGAN OUTPUT jack.

I just confirmed with the guy who worked on this project: if you turn the modulation knob all the way down (fully counterclockwise) the modulation is disengaged.

Rest assured that I've been harassing the guy that wrote the manual. It sounds like he's going to be revising it to include the modulation off thing.

Cory - why do the manuals for your pedals suck so badly? Why not include some sample settings? What is the idea to give people so little information? Ok - it's not just you - even boutique companies like Darkglass seem to completely drop the ball on things like this.

When I get a new pedal, I would like to be able to get 80% of the way to nirvana just by reading the manual. Yet it usually becomes an absolute battle. If it wasn't for the settings threads on this board I may have given up on things like the Duality or even the B7K.
 
You should see my company's software manuals.... Manuals are surprisingly hard to make. When I did my obligatory engineering technical writing course at uni, it all looked so simple and straightforward, I was so wrong. FWIW, you need someone who is really good at it, and engineers who have 5-6 hours to spare to sit down with the Tech Writter...
