Double Bass New Remic D540

Hi Adam,

Very nice review video, and beautiful playing as usual!

Can you elaborate on the relative amount of bleed between the D540, D5400 (red) and D5400LB (green)? I think I caught one comment at the end of the video that you thought maybe the D540 fell somewhere between the red and green in terms of bleed?

I asked the same of Thorkild and he simply replied the white would be similar to the red.

Thanks!

You know, I didn’t do a bleed check this time around. Having used both during my online lessons these days, I do feel that this new one doesn’t pick up as much ambient sound as the 5400. Of course, the true test is with a drummer or guitarist on stage. That ain’t happening any time soon, sad to say.

That would be nice to know, but I based on the answer you got from Thorkild it appears that the "White" just like the Red is a Recording Mic that will work for trio or duo live. I do hear a difference between the DB 540 and the DB5400 Arco as it's got

better detail and warmth. Beautiful playing Adam what a accomplished Bassist and Artist you are.

Since my new amp has needed an outboard HPF I have had the Grace Felix plugged in again, and since I have the Felix and my friend returned the Green Remic (I have always said Remic not Re-Mic like adam says....I am sure I am wrong but I still say it that way) I thought maybe sumthin has changed (I really couldn't get a good sound out of it before too boxy and weird midrangy) but I plugged it in and well sumthin did change. IT sounds great now especially mixed with the Wilson K4. I even tried putting both the K4 and Remic into the Sarno V8 and THAT sounds totally sick and beautiful but I end up using it with the K4 into the V8 and the Remic into the Felix because the impedance matching of the V8 really minimizes the twangy electric sound that the piezo can have.
Another thing, a kind and well known singer songwriter I know has commisioned me and some boys to add tracks to her latest album from home and I have been recording with the Red Remic. TOTALLY sick crazy good sound. I have used it both on the H clamp...I have touted this for years but no one ever has done it except me as far as I know but the Remic on the H clamp under the G foot is exceptional. But the recording is going great, by little bass sounds huge, no handling noise no buzzes no proximity problems and no mic stands and junk to trip over in my small treehouse studio.
But the return of the Green is making me rethink my no more mic for live stance. I get no feedback even really loud.
Hey Adam how do you get the Felix on that stand like that?

If only the H-Clamp would work on my bass, but alas it won't hold, but under the tailpiece is great for me with either the Remic DB 5400 or 5400LB. From what I can hear of the new 540 it sounds like they are trying to address some of the issues that you can have with the Remic 5400LB. Moving
toward a less expensive, single microphone with better rejection and sensitivity. It's sound is virtually identical to the 5400 Pizz and really solid arco sound.

I'm not Adam and I don't know about his solution, but I'm using a simple monitor stand and it works really fine.. :)

For my ears the D540 sounds "not too bad", but I don't see the need to replace my DB5400 by a D540 :) As Adam told before... it might change after a "true test on stage with a guitarist and/or a drummer"...

But really great playing...:hyper:

True,
Without having the new D 450 out on a gig, it's difficult to asses how it works with drums. If I did not already own both the 5400 Remics then I'd be purchasing one right away because they have lowered the price point. Comparing a Remic to another Remic is kind of like
comparing a thoroughbred to a thoroughbred of a different color. :)

Pretty much this. If I already didn’t have every dang model Thorkild has, plus a couple that he hasn’t released (if you’ll pardon the humblebrag), I wouldn’t be running out the door to buy a D540. But if I wanted to get in the Remic game at a more modest price point, this would be the one. I don’t know if he plans to mass produce these, but I suspect that it would be a solid investment once the current situation gets better.

19 in stock when I looked today.

Mine arrived yesterday (no 24 in the countdown) , and I am very happy with my first impressions:hyper:.
- Compared to the green, it seems to have a very even frequency response.
- It has hotter output than the green.
- It seems less sensitive to the position on the bass - I can put it under the tailpiece and it sounds pretty much the same as under the bridge. The green is way too bassy under the tailpiece on my bass. I think it is picking up proportionally less from the down-facing port?

The packaging is minimal, it would have been nice to get the pouch. I have never used the plastic hard case for the green, but the pouch is handy. I can wear that for the significant price drop.

I have had a second-hand green for a while, and I really wanted the red for quieter gigs (one day) and recording, but it is out of my price range. Second hand they seem very rare and go quickly. Adam's review helped me decide on the white, in fact I probably would not have known the white was available if not for TB.

Remic were very quick to answer my questions about the new mic and were willing to tell me that it had slightly lower specs than the red. I can't compare the two, so perhaps ignorance is bliss.

Going to plug in to my powered speaker today and check out feedback potential - if I get a break from work-at-home.

Steve

I guess I figured it out. The actual mic part is at the opposite end of the connector, or white, part. I guess the web site is designed for people who already know what the product is. Seems strange to show a photo of the XLR end, and no photos of the actual mic.

Bob,
It’s embedded in a camera foam insert. The mic itself is quite small. It’s surrounded by foam on all four sides. The mounting system is simple, effective, and easy to remove and install. Just my take. The whole assembly fits inside of your hand. :)

Thanks Ric. I understand that now. I spent quite a few years developing content for web sites; it never would have occurred to me to not explain how it is designed. The assumption of the content provider is that everyone knows how the mics are made and mounted; clearly not the case. Again, not important to the discussion of the OP, and I apologize for the derail.

Bob, i think you raise a good point, and I’ll be happy to pass that along to Thorkild. In truth, we have discussed putting together a FAQ series for the bass mics. If I had more time...
