New SX headstocks...

Don't despair, folks - relief is on the way! (Well, not literally - it will be a little while yet.)

Good luck with your venture.

May I suggest that if you really want to succeed in leeching the Fender market, a similar script and placement of logo is ideal. SX had that going for them too.

Anything too different is in Jay Turser territory, as is SX without the headstock shape.

I ordered an sx jazz bass and it's supposed to be the last of the old headstock designs. Glad I could snatch it before they're all gone. I actually wanted an sx p bass, but went for the jazz mainly because I found some with the old headstock. I thought it would be cool to try out a jazz bass anyway. ;)

I want a p bass with old design headstock. Wondering if it worth getting a p and a j, and then swapping necks. Seems I could easily sell the j parts, or use them for some other project.

Of course I'd end up with a j neck on a p body. Not an unpopular combo, though I do like the p width necks.

The bigger dilemma is limiting myself to the Amazon gift card I got from work. Most Amazon SX basses are lefties...

Pictures, please.

can do. If mine werent a five i might have just done tele....anyway. here ya go.

I just received my SX Ursa 3 MN BK and although it is not "THE" headstock that most folks think it should be, it sounds better than the Squiers I have played as well as some Mexican Fender Standards. I looked at this Bass for the last couple of months not very crazy about the new headstock (which is the exact headstock on the type of guitar kits you can buy off of amazon.com) yet, I like being different anyway--SX Basses are different from the "real deal" anyway because they cost 1/5 or 1/10 the price of a Fender depending on which one you buy--The headstock doesn't make the Bass sound better or worse. I think that SX basses will still be around and who knows? Look at the resale of those ugly Univox Hi Flier guitars! I had one and let someone "borrow" it and if I still had it, I would sell it because I hate the way it looks but others think it is the greatest thing since toilet paper. Don't knock it so quickly, it may be a collector's item one day! I have played mine for an hour and I like it! For $116.00 (includes shipping off ebay), I can get used to the headstock.

Cool. Gives me hope that there is enough wood on the 4 to do something interesting. I figured even a tele was not possible.

i bet you can easily get something cool with a 4. or at least make it more rounded and less pointy in 2 or 3 hours.
I really recommend Cistrip. put it on for like an hour and the nuc-organ comes off and looks really nice. there is a good tut on that here somewhere.

thanks. that is/was a new ursa headstock.

so you are saying they can be reshaped?:hyper:

I posted a while back about the headstock's shape changing and I was mocked. Someone said, "the sky is falling, oh noes". Now who's laughing? No one is, because they look ridiculous. I heard that the headstock change was due to Lakland. I can't confirm if that's real or not. I really enjoy my SX and I am glad I snagged it up while I could. I really wanted the Jazz 3TSB with the block inlays and ashtrays that was like $150ish and when I went to buy it the next day, they were gone. I may grab a fretless but not sure if its my bag or not. Never played fretless before. Anyone know if Rondo is going to start offering the yamaha clones again? at least the 2+2 headstock doesn't look as shocking to my eye.

As always, YMMV, IMO. ;)

Wow, I didn't realize all the work you put in to make that fugly headstock look better. That answers my question about the reshape. Too much work with tools I don't have :D

Off topic, try the burst. There's a good tutorial on the Reranch site. And, if you mess up...black is a good last resort. That's why fender has so many black basses, messed up 3TSB.
