New to forum, with question

Hi, I just registered to this forum. I am looking for some advice. I apoligise if I am posting this in the wrong thread.

Ive been playing bass for about 3 years. I play a spector euro ReBop 4 string. I play in a death metal band, and we tune drop c. But I work on my theory/note reading and jazz in standard. But my problem is I am always tuning back and forth between the two, and i heard that is no good for your neck. I also play with medium gauge strings and when I am in a low tuning I have horrible clank. Would you recremend I get a separate bass for each tuning? Also in a lower tuning, would heavier gauge strings reduce the clank I get on the low c string?

Yeah man, with tunings that far apart, I would definitely have another bass handy. I recommend getting the low C bass set up for that tuning so you won't have problems. I don't know what to tell you about string gauge though, I guess just experiment. I just play in standard and half step down (and a lot of drop D), so my situation is different. But good luck :bassist:

I don't think you'll need to get a whole new bass, just make sure your neck is pretty stable. Some heavier strings would do the trick, maybe get some 110-55's or something around that.

On a side note, hope you enjoy that spector! I've heard nothing but nice things about those.

Thanks for the replys. Id love to use a higher tuning for my band but my guitar playing is set up for c, and he wont go any higher. I am very happy with the spector, it sounds great! My strings now are Dr high beams 105-45. Ill have to give those others a try.

I was having the same problem, so I got a 5 string... (my metal band was tuned to B).
the whole changing the tune is not good for the neck, it just kills it slowly... if you can afford having another abss.. I would recomand it...
try other basses, maybe a 5string will be the answer to yor questions (maybe insted of owning 2 basses own 1 5stringer...)
I tried the 5string and found out it wasn't for me, now I have 1 bass tuned on B (BEAD) and I wanna get another one to go on a EADG tune.
hope it helpd...
be the way, I use 135 gauge for the low B, it takese a little time to get used to, but it has the best sound...
hope it helpd:)
