New Years Bass Resolutions

....probably less talkbass.com too.......and more 'playbass'....

Less noodling around and more practice.

Practice more

I hereby resolve to work hard and long at being a solid, deep, deep in the pocket groove player.

Spend more time sight reading, increasing my knowledge of harmony (on the piano and and the bass) and master the fretboard. Once all of these formalities are taken care of, learn to play "Giant Steps". Other than that, not much!!! :D

A Groove is a Terrible Thing to Waste!

In CST, I now have just under nine hours to 2010. My one resolution is IotaNet's favorite saying,"more Mel Bay, less Ebay!"

Seriously, I don't feel like spending big money on a new bass only to play the same tired licks. I plan to make some real progress as a player in 2010, God willing.:bassist:

O booooyz!!! Same thing definitely! I actually have the idea of creating a club here on TB where we could learn or improve a bit together. The idea is to be accountable to your fellow TBers who have the same concern.

Each participants would have the following assignments:
- 1 sight-reading excercice
- 1 velocity or speed excercice
- 1 Jazz standard to learn (melody, chords sequences, etc.)
- 1 one bass cover of a popular tune of his or her choice

The best would be that each participant be able to post a recorded video or sound clip of him or her doing few measures of each of the above-mentioned assignments; just a few measures only (yeah, overcoming the fear of self-recording is part of the excercices).

What do U think?

Just one - for now, but the night is young... Mine is to FINALLY FINISH THAT BASS I STARTED BUILDING LAST FEBRUARY!!!

The wife and I are actually playing hermit tonight and staying home. In a little while she and the kids will be snoozing and I will start making good on that resolution.

1. get a proper amp rig! borrowing isn't cutting it anymore.
2. get the pedals i need (need need, not GAS need, lol. sansamp and a tuner should do just fine, maybe an octaver later)
3. practice more! this is the big one, my technique is terrible right now.

I say we start a "no gas 2010" club and see who can hold out the longest . State a singular or minimal need(s) , like I have and fight any and all gas.
Monthly prizes include a warm fuzzy feeling and a fat wallet.

I now have 3 basses.
I hopefully have cured my gas and found a American deluxe P used for a steal.

NO new basses for me in 2010 , actually nothing really catches my eye/ear and hasn't for awhile.

I will however buy a BRAND NEW amp/cab so hopefully no failures for awhile , ones that cost anyway.

I see rhythm training in my near future as I have gotten a little sloppy/lazy. Clod weather and the post holiday season should afford me plenty-o-practice time

The method sounds like a good one, but the club thing seems a little like "Bass Club for Men" or "Basswatchers"...I dunno....

Practice more... not play more.... practice more. Id like to actually learn more scales and modes and whatever those fun thingys are called.

Work on more advanced slap techniques
Work on getting more tones by using my hands rather than gear.
Get a smaller alternative to my 8x10. (prob eden 4x10 or swr 8x8)
also save enough cash to buy myself a roscoe for next christmas.

What i meant by "club" is actually "thread" . I meant a thread in the same genre as "Who is transcribing what right now" in the Ask janek forum (English is not my first language sorry for the confusion!)

If you want to improve Ur sight-reading skills or Jazz standards fluency for example, U can participate in that specific area by dedicating few minutes everyday for an agreed-upon amount of time and then later post a recording of U executing few measures of the exercice etc.
Do I communicate the idea clearly enough?

ya, well.....

So I said I'm pretty much done buying every shiny bass I see...guess what I did last night? Bought another bass....:eyebrow: I know I said maybe one more bass, but little did I know then that less than 4 hours later would be the time! And, it was not the bass I was eluding to in my last post here!

The only way I can save face is to claim that I said in 2010 I would most likely buy the bass....it was 2009 when I bought the Lake Placid Blue fretless....so, okay, now I am pretty much done buying basses! I want to go through 2010 without buying another bass! Did someone say "No New Bass in 2010 club"? I'm down with that! I should really clean up all the projects I have going now anyway, all 3 of them!

I might even take lessons and finally learn to play with one of them idiotic pick things....

My Bands Resolutions are:
Playing way More Gigs, Recording, Finishing up a few more songs.

Personal Music resolutions:
New Rig (I too am borrowing an amp and it drives me crazy).
Keep learning more theory and technique.
Push my band out of this retro direction they seem to start falling into, and into a new era of Metal, currently Undefined. (as soon as I figure out what that is)
