Newbe Needs Help with Portable Recording Gear Purchase

Hi Guys;

I'm new to recording, so if any of this sounds ignorant, just let me know.

I'm wondering what you would recommend to do the following: 1. be able to record rehearsals - something extremely portable, quality sounding, that could be downloaded onto computer and burned as CD, and; 2. be able to plug-in my bass and used as a portable practice amp.

I've looked at the Zoom H4 & Boss Micro BR - any others I should be considering? Pros & cons of the Zoom VS Boss? (I like the drum machine feature of the Boss).

Finally, any recommendations for folding headphones?

That Yamaha is awesome. If you need to keep the cost down this might be worth looking into. No DC burner however. It stores to CF but they are really getting cheap these days. Easy to drop it into your computer via USB adapter.

yeah, with the yamaha, tracking is pretty good, but then burn wavs and mix them in your favorite editor, and you can come up with really good sounds. Or mix them on the console, but I definitley preferred burning wavs. Also the number of simultaneous tracks is huge, yamah has always been really good about that, i have despised recorders where I can't even get the drums done right in one shot!

DO NOT GET AN M-AUDIO MICROTRACK! ABSOLUTE RUBBISH IMO! The build quality is terrible. There, that's my rant over with ;)

I do field recording's myself. I few things to consider:

If you're recording practice sessions, quality might not be a super issue. Consider a minidisc and stereo mic option. Most older minidiscs offer mic 'plug in power' and 'line in' facilities. Newer ones with the added advantage of usb connectivity. A minidisc recorder is super cheap off eBay now, about £20 maximum, and a stereo mic from Sony or similar might knock you back £40.

I'm not too sure on the bass practice amp side of things, but a small mixer like a Behringer UB range might offer a super small practice recording setup at a fraction of the cost of a Boss unit.

Just my 2 pennies worth....
