Hi everyone

This is my first post .... so another newbee joins and needs words of wisdom.

I am interested in learning the bass and wanted to know a good starting point for my first bass guitar (4 string) and amp starter kits.

I have seen lots of offers on fleebay and other sites and have been looking for a while.

Contenders.....encore kit @ £80 - £130
.....vantage kit @ £ 160ish
.....warwick kit @ £377 (blackhawk)

ANY OTHER CONTENDERS?? LIMIT IS £400-£500

I understand that the more expensive 'kit' will be a better amp and guitar, but I need advice on the benifits of each.

Don't want to waste ££ if the bass is not for me....but I also don't want to have to buy a new guitar (pretty soon) if I start to get a bit good

Why a kit?
I'm not a fan of those starter packs.

(The euro and british pound is about the same at the moment... so I'm going on 500€ budget in your case.)


Cheapest little beginner practice amp you can buy... hmmm...
I'm a Hartke fan so I recommend one of their cheapest offerings:

Keep in mind: you'd only be having a bedroom amp only, not much sound quality or power to play alongside a guitarist.

500 £ or € would be a tight budget on an amp alone if you need something powerful for jamming and small gigs.


Basses, I recommend Squier.

You can have Affinities for around 180 € or £.
Classic Vibe and Vintage modified or high quality basses that go between 300 and 400.

But I would recommend the [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] for a beginner because of it's versatility. at around 250 € or £.

Comfortable precision bass body, comfortable jazz bass neck, P/J pickups.

I have ended up with a warwick rockbass and a warwick 30.1 amp + additional 'bits'...bag / stand etc.

I am very pleased with it..............

Hey Geordie, welcome to TB. I'd check out a Made in Mexico Fender Precision bass. Or Jazz bass. They are a step up from the squires and can be a good guitar for the money. I'm still playing mine after many years along with my more expnesive basses.

Make sure that you go play them-if you can----the right one will call out to you. and bass's are not all equal even the same model and make......
