Newbie issues with Cubase, please help!

Hi,

So I've gotten Cubase to start playing around with recording bass and midi tracks with my existing computer. I just hooked up my bass into the line-in on my soundcard, and I get my bass tone in mono, but Cubase doesn't pick it up. My line-in volume is all the way up and I can hear it, but Cubase doesn't register it. If I change the plug over to the mic input, Cubase picks it up and I can record, but I get a distorted signal and it has a ton of latency.

I've been fiddling with the Cubase settings but I can't seem to solve this problem, and the Cubase forums I've been to have been way over my head...can anyone explain this to me?

What version of cubase are you using?

On version 4, I press F4 to access the VST connections. In that window I can define what inputs and ouputs are available.

Then, in the main vindow, on each audio channel that you have and want to record to, there is a little drop-down menu on the left-hand side of the screen in which you choose the input connection for that channel.
The options in this menu depends on what you have defined in the VST connections dialog earlier. So you need to make sure that your line-in is defined there, and selected in the input menu.

I'm using Cubase SX 3.

In my VST connections, it says ASIO Multimedia Driver Stereo In and ASIO Multimedia Driver Stereo Out, I have no other options. Still fiddling, no results yet.

Make sure that the line-in isnt muted.

By default my line-in is muted in the windows audio thing.

Dont know if its the same thing you may have?

"Line In" typically indicates that it's designed for a line level signal (post pre-amp). Instrument level is not a hot enough signal for a "Line In".

Something to be aware of...a standard computer soundcard (even a "good" Soundblaster card) is not designed for audio recording. Even if you get sounds from it, the quality will be very mediocre and latency will be a big issue. I highly recommend looking into a proper audio interface. Presonus, M-Audio, Lexicon, Line6, etc. all make a variety of interfaces for any budget.

mmmm...double click in the speaker icon that appears in the left side of the start bar in windows...now go to options and select settings or propieties(I don't know how this goes in english...my windows is in spanish... ) and then select recording...
after you do this there will be a window with different things on it and a couple off settings than can either be marked or unmarked...select them all and accept...

when you return to the window you opened at the first place (when you double clicked the speaker) you have to select line in.

I think that should fix your problem...

Thanks for all your help. olalo figured out my problem, and when I fixed it I had the same issues like I had with the mic input (way too laggy). I'm just going to have to get a good soundcard like you said Ericf.

You want real ASIO. ASIO Multimedia means serious lag.

Nuendo user here.

Before spending any money, I suggest trying the ASIO4all ASIO driver.
