Newbie problem

Well heres the deal, I have played drums off & on for over 40 years. I have always wanted to play the bass. I went to my local G/C and finely bought one this week. First I started off with Schector Giffen-4 but it just didn't feel right. So yeaterday they exchanged it for a Fender standard jass MIM. Well after playing for about 4 hours I have a problem with G note on the E-string. It sound the metal rattling on the neck? (beginner talk). I talked with one friend that plays alittle and he said to go with Ibanez. So what input would you guys have for a beginner? I have check out so many post on here that my eyes hurt and I only have a few hours before they close today. Thanks for any help and this site is great.

Get a proper set up before you decide it's not a good bass.
Most, if not all "new" instruments from GC need to be setup.

Think about how many other hands have probably been on it if it was hanging on the wall :scowl:

That is the one they did do for me before I took it home. I'm just think it mite be me:(.

Well not to cast any doubt on the quality of GC employees, but frankly I don't think I'd trust them to be competent guitar techs. Lots of experts out there, but few who actually are.

Of course if the neck has issues, then by all means take it back and try another of the same or something different. Ibanez or whatever strikes your fancy.

Find a luthier with no ties to GC and see if it's a simple adjustment or something serious.

Well you were right! A friend of mine that plays in a band came over to check it out. He said the action was set low and giving me the fret-sting noise that I have been hearing. So now I'm wondering if I should upgrade the bridge at the same time?

hey man, i wouldn't start doing modifications already.. ya just got the thing and your learning. those mim are decent basses and prob. great for a beginner. decent sound and a neck that's pretty standard. learn to play and see if you enjoy it. the fret buzz can be fixed by adjusting the neck relief and the bridge. i wouldn't go tweaking if your unfamiliar. take it to a local shop and pay the $35 or whatever for a setup. you can also try playing softer, your style may be too aggressive. if your using a pick.. stop ...try it with your fingers. enjoy the deep end ... there is no turning back :hyper:

Thanks! Yep, I figure I have enough money it without any mod's yet and no I won't try adjusting it myself. My friend told me about a guy that has his own shop and is great with Fenders. Still have a long road to learn the bass but I feel like a kid on Christmas morning everytime I can play it.
