Hi all thot Id drop in and say hello, my 8 year old daughter recently got a guitar for her birthday and after playing and singing with her mommy( an accomplished singer and piano player) she looked at me one day and said "Im sorry I dont like to hunt or shoot guns like you do, Im afraid when I get older we wont have anything to do together". Wow talk about a shocker, well after talking with my wife we went down to our local music store and purchased an accoustic bass, an Ibanez, the guy said it would be just fine for beginning and my wife is going to let my two girls give it to me for Christmas as well as a note from santa saying he arranged for me to start lessons right after Christmas. So Ill probably spend a lot of time here due to the fact I havent learned anything about music since junior high school, but I am actually excited about learning the bass and being able to spend time with my family playing music. Don't.Ever.Give.Up.
So many people love the IDEA about playing bass or guitar or whatever,and think it's going to be a cake walk. First year is very tough,and requires a lot of support. If this is something you really want,then don't give up,and keep trying.

Thanks for the advice, I will never confuse myself with all u accomplished musicians and it will not involve my every thought but the love of family is a mighty motivater to not give up lol. I will be learning for fun only with no aspirations to perform, only have fun with my family.
Welcome to the low end of the musical pool! Sounds like you have a wonderful family!
Dont worry about becoming a virtuoso. Take some lessons, read some books and watch some DVD's-get yourself some "book learning".
Then pull out some of your favorite music CD's and try to play along!!! Even if you have no idea what you're doing at first, over time things will become more clear! It can also be a TON of fun.
Also- do yourself a favor and stay away from our classified ads where your fellow TB members are selling various basses, amps and more.
You might be starting out with an acousitc bass, but in a year or 2 you could easily find yourself with a couple of solidbodies, an amp and a gig in a local cover band!
Have fun and enjoy the journey- you're going to find a bunch of mostly decent people who are willing to share their experiences with you.

Yeah, that's right. I've been playing bass in bands for many years and I still love to whack some of my favourite tunes on the hi-fi and jam along.
It's cracking good fun.
