Newbie: String Recommendations

A cursory peruse of the net indicates the following regarding the strings associated with the bassists sound ( apart from equipment and technique of course)

Bruce Thomas - heavy gauge GHS rounds (dunno which ones)

Dee Ramone - Rotosound Swing Bass 66

Glen Matlock - Rotosound 77 Jazz Flats

Graham Maby - Rotosound Trubass 88 Tapewounds


Nick Lowe - Flatwounds ( who knows what brands)

Captain Sensible - Rotosound Swing Bass 66


John Entwistle - Rotosound Swing Bass 66

Paul Mcartney - Flatwounds of various brands, notably Pyramid, La Bella and Maxima. Rotosound Trubass 88 tapewounds.

From that you can see there is dull thud to bright on the spectrum.

Dee Dee was running flats on most of the original iconic material.

i think these are too bright and modern sounding for the OP. I think something like La Bella RX Nickel would be a better option.

Two things; 1: the majority of the players listed by the OP used Rotos which are brighter than the strings I listed. 2: RXs are just as bright as SB nickels.

Anyone with a VT Bass DI and a good ear for these things got any suggestions to get me in the ballpark of the classic Ramones bass sound? I'm just looking for appropriate settings and EQ options, I don't have a P bass (yet) but all good with the downpicked attack.

I'm using an Epiphone Thunderbird IV with the VT Bass DI through the effects return of an Amoeg BA 108 V.1, Rotosound RS66 LD's on the bass.

Fair enuff. Regardless. The OP has quite a broad range of string 'shades' used by bassists he listed. Has to choose one I guess.

RXs sound very dead compared to SBs when I tried them on a 5 string Stingray, especially the B, E and A strings.

RX Nickels sound like a broken in set of Rotos to me..

First Ramone's record. Pan balance to all the way to the left. Chromes and a P will get you there without all the bright roundwound noise.
