just signed up on forum. I've been struggling with guitar for years with my giant fingers, so I decided to switch to upright bass. I never see em at jams, but plenty of guitars. I played electric bass when I was young so I'm hoping to catch on pretty quick. Now I just need to find the right bass. Been looking online because they are hard to find around west-central Florida.

Welcome to TB, and, hopefully, welcome to the double bass! I'll warn you that the DB is as difficult an instrument to play as any you will find. Your familiarity with electric will give you a general roadmap for the acoustic; but physically, it's another beast altogether. It will take some serious work to get up to speed, and care to make sure you don't develop bad habits or injuries. I'd recommend getting a teacher as soon as you get a bass.

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but I would recommend that you check out these links: BASS FORUM LINKS (Newbie Links): PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING NEW TOPICS | TalkBass.com

A few years ago, I too left the guitar herd, and am so glad I did. I would say that you might not want to expect that you will "catch on quickly," but I bet you might love it right away anyway. You will see lots of advice here about the importance of learning proper technique and I am here to suggest that you heed that advice as much as possible. I learned on my own -- and picked up lots of bad habits that came back to haunt me in the form of tendonitis, carpal tunnel, etc., which cost me a lot of playing time and money. If you do not have any good teachers where you live, you can get some great tips by reading whatever you can find and by watching instructional videos. Good luck and congrats!

howdy, just grabbed a 39 Kay. Spent some money getting the bass set up. Really glad I did. Played guitar for 35 years. Still do in my band but dang
this bass has both hooks in me. Heading to a bass camp in B.C. this summer, better get good by then, ha.
Have fun.
