I agree, it shouldn't cut out, but some tube circuits are not designed to overdrive, they are designed to add tube compression and harmonics to the sound but still stay clean.

If you want to get more grit from the pre, you may wanna consider changing the preamp tube from a 12AX7 to a 12AU7 which should overdrive earlier

True. But I'm pretty sure that's not the case with this amp, as it states: "Set to 7-10 gives extreme overdriven and sustained sounds."
Might look into different tubes at some point, cheers.
Like I said I was pushing the pre's, but even into the red, it shouldn't cut out. After today, (with it constantly in red, at very low output volume with no vibration from cab it was totally fine, no cutting out) I will try again at full volume tonight.

it could possibly be that the head is picking up too much vibration from the cab at high volume...?

Yeah, but that's not good/shouldn't happen. I also had it plugged into another 8x10 (while it was sat on the other)...still happened.
I'm now thinking its a mains electrical problem. Will update later.

The head weighs a ton? It is a pretty big Solid State head, I imagine the tube version weighs even more... I have both the tube and SS versions at the store where I work, will try them out this weekend and let you know if I get the same thing with the preamp

They definitely do dirty up happily if they are working right. This one needs a tech trip.

Mr Foxen: If the input LED goes into the red it should still be OK? It should cut out, right? Like I said been happily in red here at work at low output volumes, so would think it should be ok at louder. Will see tonight.

I wouldn't think it would draw significantly more? Not as much as pushing the output volume anyways?

You'd think if that was the problem though (dodgy mains) it would blow a fuse? rather that cut out for a few seconds.

Oh well. My conclusion is this amp is knackered.

Tried:
2 different cabs. Both tested at around 4.8 ohms
2 different basses
2 different speaker cables
2 different instrument cables
Amp not on top of the cab
Amp plugged into 2 different ring mains

This is the 2nd Nexus FET I have tried to buy. The first one failed the "pre -dispatch test"

So. I now wait for number 3

Someone said they had a faulty Orange head that did a similar thing. Found out there was a problem with the thermal cut-off resister. Makes sense.

Ok I tried it at work with the tube pre at full volume with the master low and gradually raised it up till it was very loud... no cutting out at all. It didn't sound very nice though (to my ear)

I think you may have gotten a rotten one

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Ive owned this head for a while and found to avoid constantly running it in the red. The other piece of advice is that my head doesnt like particular brand leads. It may sound weird but it cut out from vibration. Persist though as I love this head and its smashed a lot of other more expensive heads ive used. All the best tones seem to come from blending the fet with tube in the preamp. These beasts love any effects you plug in. Thats the main reason i bought one. Its ashame they didnt make 12 inch cabs though. Good luck.
