NFL 2018 Week #5

Some talking head was speaking about how the NBA changed the hands rule and made it all about dropping 3's and fans loved it, and how baseball has the home run era and fans love it and the same is what the NFL is doing. Following them. I remember when the NFL was about defense not offense. The real issue with the leagues is they've changed the game in such a way that the HOF for any of them is meaningless. For the NFL you would have to have 2 different halls, one for offense and one for defense so a definite line of demarcation can be made between real football and Goodell branded football.

I read that Tom got his 500th TD. I wasn't watching of course. I couldn't be bothered.

The problem is that players have just gotten too big and too fast. Ken Bowman, Lombardi's center, was 210 the first time they won the Super Bowl. Today you have players 150 pounds bigger, who probably could beat him in to 40. Unless you went back to no substitutions, if you don't change the game into a track meet, players are literally going to be killed out there. The NFL has already dealt with the concussions. Could you imagine today's players hitting like Tatum or Atkinson?

The Eagles have regressed, and key players are injured or banged up. I'm bullish on the Rams, Bears, and Chiefs this year. Despite all the talent, I don't see the Chiefs making a deep playoff run. That's all I got right now.

The lack of talent on the Eagles left side secondary is being exposed. Jalen Mills couldn't catch a cold if you threw a bag of boogers on him. Has no technique against the double move and speedsters just blow by him. Playing press coverage at the line of scrimmage is non existent. Teams are saying "just go at the guy with the green hair". Hope Tim Jurnigan, (back injury) can get back soon, Jason Peters can overcome his quad injury, Jay Ajayi has a back issue, Sproles has a hammy, Clement has a quad. I don't know how much flying the Eagles will/can do this Sunday.

I get that. Logically it makes perfect sense. It's just the implementation has been such that it allows for too much supposition as to the NFL's true interest. They want ratings. That has come at the cost of players forever. To think that now they are concerned is laughable. It brings ratings though ( negative press is still press after all ) so they double dip, and they do it with a wink and a smile.

No one is saying the NFL doesn't look at the bottom line before it takes a sip of coffee in the morning, but it's just the truth. Either we take football the way it is now, or we say goodbye to football. The only other thing I could see is to eliminate all substitutions other than injury, but Tom Brady isn't playing safety, and we aren't going back to an offensive lineman kicking field goals (although, oddly, I think I would prefer that).

My solution is eliminate free substitutions and eliminate pads and helmets. Neither will happen.

Yep.
The new generation of fans want point, points, then more points scored.
Then you have the fantasy football geeks who want all their guys throwing for 400 yards or running for 150 every game while catching 9-11 passes for 150-200 yards.
Can't get much of that with a real defense on the field.

The Dolphins blew a 17-0 lead vs. the Bengals, allowing them to score 27 unanswered in the last 20 minutes (thanks to Tannehill throwing a pick six and fumbling the ball away for another TD). Ugh.

The Browns missed a game winner before OT, but got one in OT. And they missed an extra point. They don't do anything the easy way. When was the last time the Browns won two games? And when was the last time they were at .500 this late in the season? I could almost be talking about the Mariners.

There they are. There's those Titans that can play down to the competition as good as anyone.

Mari-outta learn to QB in the NFL.

QBing: 2018 Passing(?) 2 TD's - 4 Int's Rushing(...) 1 TD - 2 Fumb.

Mari-outta think about his impending role as a career backup.

I wonder if Succop can throw . . .

Gotta feel for Mason Crosby. He's had a pretty decent career, but this one horrible game will follow him for quite a while. The tough thing is, those missed FGs (4) and XP (1) would have given Green Bay the victory. Here's hoping he'll bounce back just fine.

To pull a Chris Berman - Mason Crosby, Stills, Nash and None.

That was brutal.
