Nightmare Re-Wire!!

Ive had and old bass for years and knew the pickups n wiring wasnt right, opened it up to see the horror inside lol. if i put pics on can someone try and help me rewire the bugger as it seems a mess. Its a Tokai neck with a random body on it lol if you want particular pics let me know

Take everything out, and start from scratch.

Go to radio shack and buy some stranded copper wire.

Fender's website has all the wiring schematics for their pick up configurations, and it actually makes a lot of sense if you have a little knowledge of wiring.

what aboout the pickups, the neck pickup has twice as many wires from its as the bridge, and insead of grounding to the bridge, there are metal plates under each pickup and one under the pots ?????... oh and i got a D in electronics at school so give me the Idiots Guide lol

You have two different kinds of pickups in there. The two-wire one is hot and ground. The four-wire is most likely a humbucker, so there's two wires per coil. These are usually wired in series, which would explain that wire splice shown towards the bottom of the 2nd and 3rd pics.

The metal plates behind the pickups are an electromagnetic shield. These are connected to ground.

The wiring doesn't look that bad, besides the missing ground wires! I'd keep the portion that is there and just add the ground wires.

yep, looks like you have a dimarzio model J for the neck, and this guarantees hum when both pickups or the bridge only is selected. depends on what you want to do, you may have to replace one or both pickups, if it works for you as is, I would just put the plate back and forget about it. For me I would buy new pots and maybe match the pickups
