I wasn't sure where to put this. I saw something pretty cool last night. A band called Common Thread up in Cape Girardeau. These guys were a trio that played country and some older rock. Bass player - lead/harmony singer, acoustic guitar player - harmony/lead singer, utility player (lead guitar, harmonica, fiddle) - harmony singer. The bass player had a kick trigger and the rhythm guitar player had a snare trigger and a foot tambourine. For the most part the bass player hit the kick on down and the other guy hit on the upbeat. They kept it simple and the dance floor stayed full. They had vocal three part harmonies so that helped fill it out as well. Just wondering if anyone had seen this before or gigged out like this.

No drummer and still fill the dance floor?

I have seen people use drum machines, but never triggers like that. Sounds like a cool idea since drum machines can be very sterile.
I have played country successfully without a drummer. Worked fine but the crowd was used to/expecting no drummer.

i saw a band pull off something like that in a more low-tech way once when their drummer couldn't make a gig.
3 players left, two guitars and a bass, they all sat down;
IIRC, bass guy had a little kick drum, one guitar had a regular hi-hat on one foot and a floor-standing snare drum rigged to a pedal on the other, and the other had a shaker of some sort rigged to his foot pedal.
it was actually a very cool roots-rock sort of sound, even if all the songs tended to have the same sort of slow mid-tempo beat.

Well I can tell you it sounded pretty good. I talked to the guitar player for a while. He said they sometimes play with a drummer but this was easier setup and tear down and of course a little more money. He said your leg gets a little tired and you can't move around which is something they miss. I didn't miss the cymbals / hats as much as I thought I would.
Mumford & Sons does that, too - no drummer, just a kick drum on one pedal and a tanbourine/etc on another.
Same deal, too - multiple harmonies and lots of syncopation in the music itself.
