I'd like to see a project in various color schemes, but I don't want to ask for a photoshop request because I want to see A LOT of different options. Can somebody recommend me a simpler utility than photoshop to play "dress up" with my bass?

No more photoshop requests

On a serious note, I would say just buy/download a copy of photoshop and watch a vid an instruction vid on youtube, I'm sure changing colors isn't that difficult. Good luck.
I've been using Hornil StylePix. It's also free and the only thing I'm missing from Photoshop is the smudge tool.
