Ok, I listened to that...ain't nothin' jazz about it, bud. I've really been trying to be cool about this, but I can't hold back anymore. My bullsh*t meter has been blaring for so long I can't help it anymore.

I do not know what I'm doing but I'm adapting myself to the song. A lot of the jazz cats tell me I am in reality playing scales and arpegios and I don't even know it.

Look, Talkbass is a cool place, and we're glad you're here, just be straight with people. There's no shame in learning by ear, nor is there shame in realizing that reading and theory are what you need to take it to the next level. In fact, it's damn admirable, but you don't need to tell people you're doing things that we know you're not. Be stright with folks, and they'll be straight with you.

My advice, take lessons, learn to read, get your theory together. Hang out here and soak up all the information that guys like Ed Fuqua, Chris Fitzgerald, Jazzbo and guys like that give out every day! I know I've learned a lot by spending time here, and there are a ton of others who will tell you they have too.

Just don't try to snow the snowman.

Right on Pacman. I've been watching this thread from the beginning with my bs meter twitching rather severly. Self-contradiction is usually a good tip-off. Thanks for pointing out what I could yet put my finger on. This is why you are the BEST man!

i'm sorry i just don't think that what he's saying is possible. i have a pretty good ear and i've met people that have ears that are even better and there's no frickin' way this guy can do what he says he can do, and if he can i apologize.

Is it just me, but I don't remember Harlem being the birthplace of the best cats in the 40s. Let's see; Bird was from KC, Miles was from Illinois if I remember. Where was Diz from again? The swing cats like King Oliver were from Nawlins. Now if someone said to me, "Did you come out of Nawlins in the 30s?" Then I'd be cool.

Most people don't ask where I came from, they just ask me to go back to where ever it was.

Theory is for the most part the language that allows the communication of music in a written format. That is it's basic form. You've spoken a language all your life, right? Imagine learning to write it down as an adult. It can be done and it certainly won't inhibit any creativity. It might make things go even better!
