Oh man, I love Chinatown. A must for any noir fan, or really anyone who loves great movies.Great thread!
Chinatown is probably my fav noir. Amazing story/ script and stellar performances. Roman Polanski with the switchblade is hilarious.
Also anything with Humphey Bogart in it.
Detour, from 1945. Great movie. Another oddish production I'd put in the noir category is The Red House, with Edward G. Robinson. Always was impressed by that. Also, Orson Welles' Touch Of Evil.
The machinist probably qualifies as neo-noir. Low-key lightning, low color saturation and the such. So does most if not all of Von Trier's, Noé's and Lynch's and I like pretty much all they do.
... Books are also included. You just gotta love a good Hardboiled story.
I think this thread is painting the definition of Film Noir with much too broad a brush. Isn't Film Noir the old detective movies based in L.A. (which were in B&W) and a handful of more recent movies based on that theme? (Chinatown, Blade Runner, etc...)
Film Noir doesn't mean any film that is dark or depressing.
I'm a fan of Lars von Trier and I wouldn't describe anything I've seen of his as anything remotely resembling Film Noir.
Calvin as Tracer Bullet.
Anyone ever seen Brian Helgeland's Payback starring Mel Gibson? It's just mean, man.
