NON-DOUBLED EIGHTS

Considering that factory basses only go up to 7, all 8s are custom builds, right? Can't imagine too many exist.

Probably nothing stock worth buying. I've seen a few companies selling many stringed basses for $1000 or less, but I can't imagine the ergonomics are good. It's also hard to cheaply manufacture a neck that's thin enough for comfort and still stable.

Hey GODBASSMAN,

If you haven't already checked out his website, Bill Conklin of Conklin guitars has several pictures of 8 string basses as well as 7 strings, 9 strings, and 10 and 11 string basses or two.

If you look around you might be able to find another half dozen or more companies that can build an eight string basses for you. I hope this information helps you out some. :)

Hmmmm. I can't say for sure. My Groove Tools GTBD-7 seven string has all round wound strings - even for the high F string. As the one fellow pointed out on the first page having a fanned fingerboard can help even out the tone and tension of the strings.

As far as string gauges for a low F# string I think the common guage used in the Conklin bass strings manufactured by SIT strings is a 0.165 gauge.

GODBASSMAN you might want to check out the Circle K string website. They have all kinds of technical information about string guages and tensions for strings, etc. They sell string sets for basses ranging from 4 to 12 strings.

I hope this help you out some.

I have a .166 on from Circle K. They recommended a .174 but I thought that a bit large and got the .166 and it produces a much clearer note than the .145 that was being used. I was wondering what other erb players used.
The lighter strings from Circle K tend to be no wrap strings. I ordered a .017 and .023 and both were plain. Didn't like them: too different from the wound. They have a hard feel and the tension seems off/too taut.
Will check Conklin. Thanks much.
