I think slap is inherently "funky" by nature, but these aren't pure funk.

Sorry, but many of us still find Fishbone to be an extention of Funk! Not too many conceptual differences in what they were doing and what George Clinton was doing with Funkadelic in the early years. Fishbone was just accepted by a different audience. It was a different time. George looked at them as Sons of the P!!! Listen to "When Problems Arise".

i probably worded my phrase poorly
i meant to say that slap is a funk thing, not that funk is a always a slap thing

i will listen to the suggestion, thanks

regarding the chili peppers...im not a huge fan but loved
blood sugar, and still do, its is definately well funky in many places

im not gonna get into whats funky and whats not
as i dont know enough about funk music
jamiroquai are the funkiest band ive ever been into

Most people haven't heard the name, but most everyone has heard his playing. He's literally been on thousands of albums, enough for some to argue that he's the most recorded bass play in history. He was one of the go-to session guy in L.A. for years. He was particularly sought after to work out a groove when others just could come up with anything. His solo's are flashy and very entertaining, but it's his mean and potatoes work that really blows me away. One of the grooviest and most creative ryhthm section players I can think of.

I don't think so at all. The two have nothing to do with each other. I saw a bass player playing Flight of the Bumblebee at a clinic once using a Wooten-esque double thumbing and open-hammer pluck technique. Nothing funky about that tune at all.

I'd have to say Ryan from Mudvayne is one of the best examples of slapping without it sounded funky.
I never thought hush was slap bass, just all tone and a sharp attack?

Whilst this album definitely has an element of funk to it, go out and buy Freedumb by Suicidal Tendencies. Working in slap with metal/hardcore punk.
