Not Impressed with wooten's tone

I've seen these guys like Wooten in the past.These guys are really coming from somewhere ele. Maybe another planet or other dimension.

I wonder how stable he is mentally. Most guys that are as talented as he is are usually missing a few screws.

My strings are lighter than Vics and my action is lower and usually after a show sometimes people will ask me about my tone because they say there's a nice overall tonal balance and when I tell them my gauges,they can't believe it.

With the gauges that I use I can get really boomy(and clear) if I wanted to.

to paraphrase wootens new book, if you don't like something, its not that the something is bad, its that you can't see the beauty in it (yet). This opened my eyes in regards to me thinking that rap sucks, metal is stupid, etc. Any musician that has fans must have something good about their music otherwise they wouldn't have any fans. Basically, saying that you don't like wootens tone is not a statement about him, but rather a statement about you, and frankly who cares if YOU like it or not. If you don't, then listen to something that you do like.

i just basically said this in another thread. if you dont like something, that only says something about you, not what you dont like. and instead of thinking (and posting) about why you dont like it, try to find what it is that attracts other people to it. this is how to expand your mind and should be a regular part of life, but most people would rather bitch and moan. i'll have to read this book!

John Gallagher of Raven uses severly light strings too, and his tone has piles of balls.

I used to use TI Jazz Rounds(.83 low E), and no one could figure out why I sounded so huge.

It's fine not to dig his tone, it's even fine not to dig his playing or music. But do you really have to go talking about the mental health of a guy you've never met, based on the fact that he plays a certain way and you don't dig his tone (to say nothing of the fact that he's widely considered to be one of the most humble, down to earth guys you're bound to meet)?

My post was supose to be a compliment on Wootens talent.I have no idea where you are reading any comment on his mental health.

BTW, when you play at that level tone really is not a part of the picture anymore.

Great Bassist Horrible tone. It sounded as if there was no balls to his sound when I heard his live material Id hate to be a flamer but, I seriously had to get this off my chest.

Whilst I am no fan of VW and don't particularly like his tone either , I would never in the world have started a thread about it, as it has no relevance for me whatsoever.

His tone however doesn't have to appeal to everyone.
He seems to like it and for what he does it works, I think.

As to the comments made by bluewine...quite useless really, no?

Again, when you play at Victors level and your that unique, tone really is not really a topic of discussion.He's is going to be super gifted regardless of tone.

In general, I don't like the thin, quasi-trombone-like tone of a lot of soloing bassists. Copping this kind of tone facilitates this type of playing and better communicates its more melodic nature, but give me a fat supportive tone any day. Of course, with guys like Victor, I"m simply an admirer of his very original voice but have absolutely NO desire to play like him or sound like him.

I will add, I think alot of these modern '' bass '' players have taken the instrument out of its context. Bass is meant to be low, and drive the song.

All these modern slap/pop/solo players have began to get away from ''bass'' . They OVER PLAY everything, and while they do have skills and talent, they dont know the true meaning of sitting back in the mix and complimenting the song.

These new guys want to play louder than the whole band , play solos, ect

Well, if you read my post you will see the word "gifted" several times. I don't use the term loosley. When I watch Victor he reminds me not in style but gifted wise of Jaco.

BTW, the reference to Jaco is another compliment.

yeah man, its not prejudice. Its just not my thing, and like you said, I dont listen to it.

but dont say prejudice, thats a word people use too loosely.

I guess Jauqo, you could also call me prejudice against murderers, rapist, and any other thing I dont care for.
