Not sure if I should replace pickups or sell bass?

Buzzard's Bass has fantastic per-wired control assemblies, pickups & prewired Puckguard/PU combos. They do GREAT work - have one on my Frankenfender J bass and made a huge difference. (look for NOS Orange Dot Caps...)

Do you like how it feels and/or looks? If so, replace the pickups. No shortage of reviews and clips on this site to help you decide what you'd want.

If you don't like how it feels and/or looks, then buy another bass that is overall closer to having a feel, look, and sound that you like at a price that works for you.

Strings are well worth considering as well. Easy to change and experiment with.

i put some bartolini 9CBJD1 in my fretted jbass and i love the sound . . . that is the DEEP pair.

you might want to try to find the 9CBJD3, which are the BRIGHT pair. i love the way mine sound, but there isn't a lot of punch there for rock music. that is why i might suggest the bright pair.

other than that, surf youtube looking for pickup tests and see what sound you like.

CS 60's or some other stuff might sound really awesome, but I can't really comment. def check out ebay or the used marketplace.

I say get rid of it.
You do seem hesitant regarding it's weight and that feeling won't go away. Trust me, been there. Spent a small fortune modding and I got my old jazz sounding better but still never bonded with it. Save yourself the hassle, get rid and look for a lighter weight replacement which in my experience will sound nicer acoustically will be easier on your back and more importantly will sound more open and interesting when amplified.
When you find that bass, mod the hell out of it to your hearts content. All in my experience but I'd like to spare you the brain damage and expense I went through to get to that realisation.
It's a jazz. There's hundreds of thousands of them out there. Find a used one that suits you better.
You don't have to spend a fortune to get there.
