I'm not being snarky, nor did I read through the 12 pages of replies first, but pointing out some things that got to me about the original post.
1. "Strictly rhetorical question" infers that you are not looking for any answers or replies at all.
2. I understand what you mean via context, but withfrain is not a word, as far as I know.
3. What exactly did you suggest in terms of the 4/4 ballad? Not to play rock style, or not in 4/4? If the yacht rock ballad is originally in 4/4 (like most of them are) and the drummer is playing a 4/4 (yacht?) rock beat: no harm, no foul if the goal was to step the energy up/create a different/workable/acceptable feel change. I get that there may be some defensiveness on his behalf. I drum, and when someone else in the band poorly suggests a change, I question it, but will try it suss it out, if feasible. If the suggestion is articulated decently, I'm more open to it. No need to get hateful about it. Sounds like he has a thin skin?
4. As far as what to do, it seems like you are more out there than the gig will support. I would suggest you move on if you aren't doing this to make a living.

I'm not knocking spelling. If "withfrain" was an actual, verified word in the Oxford English or Merriam-Webster Dictionaries, it would most certainly be spelled that way. I know he meant withhold and/or refrain.
Shoot, automatic spellcheck catches all kinds of words I have let conveniently slip. Just the same as I don't remember nearly as many phone numbers as the pre-cellular era.

Did a web search for withfrain, and found a a fair amount interest in hashtag withfrain. I'll give the OP the benefit of a doubt for being ahead of the crowd on the use of "withfrain," maybe the dictionaries will catch up. Camaraderie is not really part of the equation nor is that others should submit to my view of how music should be played. Professional behavior is a must - not a music thing- just well adjusted grown ups.

In bands where there is tension - conflicting musical ideas - it often creates the most interesting music.

Cream was a band that was musically fighting. And was it ever grand.

The part that is confusing to me is that some Toto songs are Yacht and some are Nyacht. Not since Opeth has a band had so many songs that are NOT in their genre!

The OP said several pages ago that he typed post #1 on his phone and has no idea why it made that word up.
