I changed strings on my restored, carved back Tyrolean. The Eudoxas (which I love) were sounding a bit muddy and I put on a set of Superflexibles that were the NOS "Kunstler"(Artist) models. This was for the GDA only; the Ext E is a spiro weich which seems happy and growly there with both sets.
I used a Titanium end pin with the Eudoxa. Leaving that in made the SFs sound like a dentist's drill. I switched to an oak endpin (which was totally blah for the Eudoxas) and the bass just sang. Much clearer sound than the Eudoxas (which were aging) and more articulate. I put in a carbon fiber pin to complete the test and it had the same effect as it had on the Eudoxas: fairly loud and clear, but no warmth or resonance at all. I know there's clearly some combination of organic (wood and gut) v inorganic (metal, carbon fiber etc) at work here. But I just found it fascinating.
