Double Bass NS Design NXT Megathread

Hi Per H,

I guess congratulations are sort of in order :-)
It's a great instrument but not with a hum... I don't have a hum on my 4 that I bought last March.

Just curious if you have tested the bass in a different building? I'm really not an expert, would that even make a difference?

If you're not able to solve the problem will you call NS in the US?

Mine is dead quiet. All the ones I have tried were dead quiet, too. Call NS and I'm sure they will help you. Their customer service has always been great.

I listened to everything including NXT on youtube, read everything - including this 24 pages megathread - and then i ordered my NXT5. It arrived 3 days ago.
I realise that tuners, bag and stand may break sooner or later, but i have not read anything about hum?
My NXT5 has an annoying 50Hz hum, following the volume control - and with extra depth when jackpot is engaged. I have tried different cables, 4 amps (EBS Classic 150, Roland 100b, Peavey MicroBass and Behringer BX108) with the same result. I have also tried different kinds of shielding(wrapped the whole bass into alu-foil and grounded it) and different kinds og grounding. May be something has gone wrong in the wiring, maybe NXT´s just are humming - can any of you tell me? I have put some pictures here Link Removed
Nice bass - but not a keeper if i hums! Per H, Denmark

I've bought a NXT5 2 weeks ago. It's deadly quiet.

Replaced the tuners with Hipshots from Gollihur Music. They are really awesome - smooth tuning and tone stays stable.

Cheers

After owning my NXT for about six months, I finally had the opportunity to use it out of the house - and the damn stand exploded on me five minutes into rehearsal.

I MacGyver'd it back together with a perfect bolt I happened to find laying around, but even after that the thing flexes and wiggles around way too much. I guess it's time for the endpin stand.

Also, is there a better aftermarket case option than the Undercover? The strap is tearing out of the OEM case.

My gig experience is that the OEM stand is fine but everyone plays differently.

Golihur has a nice hard case for the bass, have a look on the website....

How was your sound at the gig? Did you like it?

Hi I have just purchased a set of NS610 strings from Thomann, for my recently aquired NS Design NXT5. When attempting to fit the "G" string (NS611) I notice the string is about 10cm longer than the original and the silk wrap would sit in the nut slot. If I string it using the anchoring slots on the rear of the body, the length is better but the silk extends further down the finger board. Have I got the wrong strings, or would it be ok to cut the excess string length off and unwrap enough silk to clear the nut?
Thanks in anticipation

At the gig I played through a Schertler David, and at rehearsal I played through my AG500/GS112x2 rig, and at both people were flipping the heck out about it. Through an amp it sounds like an upright with a good pickup does, no qualification needed. It's awesome.

I chose my NXT today for a family gathering, just me and solo flute and me and solo voice. I thought I had a good tone. Fishman preamp going into my Phil Jones Flight Case. The girl who sang with me plays cello and was surprised how good the tone was.

Once again I was pleasantly surprised by the NXT!

I'm really sorry to hear about your stand disaster. NSD makes a really good heavy-duty stand that ships stock with the CR series basses. They will sell the stands separately. Just contact an official dealer or distributor and order one.

Jasonbraatz, I did a less expensive stand 'mod' and have been very happy with it, and it uses the central post of the original stand without changing it, it's in thread #428, http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f101/ns-design-nxt-megathread-584000/index22.html#post12750401

'Course, if the central post is fried, you're not going to be able to do this.

Hey folks! Brand new bass player here. Picked myself up an NXT Bass on the recommendations of this board. I've been playing cello for about 2 years so the transition isn't huge, but there's still some hurdles to overcome. I just started taking lessons as well, which is really an interesting experience. This teacher's pedagogical style is much different from my cello teacher - much less structured. I kinda like it!

One quick question though: I contacted the previous owner and she said that this particular bass has had the same strings on it for approximately 2 years. Is it time to change strings? I don't find anything particularly wrong with these ones, but then again I'm a total beginner. As an aside, how DO you change strings on this bass anyhow?

I have 2 questions and apologies if I'm in the wrong thread -I have an NXT 4 string and find quite a bit of buzz, if that's what I should call it, when I release the string, especially on the D string. Is this a technique issue with fingering or do I need to adjust the bass somehow? I'm a beginner so am not familiar with adjusting the bass. Also, changing the strings is not an option as I'm in a remote location for the time being. The strings are the originals that came with the bass. I don't feel that the strings are the issue, it just sounds like the released strings are somehow interacting with the fingerboard in some way. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Question 2: Have just looked at Mike Downes 'The Jazz Bass Line Book' and really enjoyed playing the first 4 or 5 pages - which I was pleased I could do. The beauty of this book for relative beginners is that the notes are written out - not just the names of cords. Does anyone have a recommendation of some downloadable drums and piano to accompany me playing very simple walking bass lines - and here's the kicker - with printable lines written out like the first pages of the Downes book? I presume there are sites that will allow me to pay a fee to get these kinds of downloadable materials and I don't mind paying. Thoughts or recommendation for a beginner would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Again, if I'm in the wrong thread I'd be happy to repost elsewhere.

I'm new too, ran across this while looking at youtube videos:
http://www.playjazznow.com

I can't recommend this or anything, I haven't tried his stuff, just FYI.

Forestabri. Thanks. I guess I'm looking for that quality of tracks, but with idiot-proof bass lines written out, not just with chord names. I don't improvise yet, or know chords well at all. There has to be some site where accompanying tracks can be downloaded with the bass notes written out.

Thanks for any thoughts!
