Oberheim OB-8 for Bass

I like that little synth. I have a Pro 800 and it is built super nicely. Not a “posh” build, but so clean and nicely put together. It sounds fantastic and is so reasonably priced. For these classic designs I think what Behringer is doing is great and it bothers me not one bit. However, when they rip off a product a year after it’s released I would never buy.

And it’s only $69! I’m trying to resist picking one up, but I’m not sure why tbh.

My sentiments exactly. I love when they bring back something discontinued, not when they copy something still in production.
There's a UB-Xa Mini that blends Oberheim sounds with an oscillator structure similar to Volca Keys. Personally I really like the Oberheim bass sound such as on Queen's Dancer, but I figure that the Pro VS should be overall more versatile.

Sorry, I wasn’t trying to talk you out of the Pro VS, I was more just amazed at the value of that cheap one. I almost can’t stand not picking up all of them for what they cost. I read somewhere that Behringer hired the guy that designed the Volcas, which would make sense.

I've heard about that too. Seems that the UB-1 Micro (digital control) is a bit more versatile than the UB-Xa Mini (Volca-like control), but unfortunately my local dealer still doesn't carry either of them.

Unfortunately the Pro VS Mini doesn't seem to sound exactly like a Pro VS. I wish someone could "hack" in the original sounds one day, but the price seems good enough for the basic waveforms (sin, saw, square) alone!

the first synth bass i was really aware of was Jan Hammer's on the song "Star Cycle" ... this made me aware that bassists had a perfectly accurate sequencer to compete with, so I practiced to be just as accurate.

the next would be the Seinfeld theme, which I didn't particularly care to emulate.

Kraftwerk etc certainly demonstrate what sequenced synth bass can do, which has a particular effect. I always felt that a real bassist should be able to do that and more. But if you don't need more, then there is that.

These days I mostly use synth bass as a sort of accent to whatever other bass is happening -- not a replacement but addition.

I've found a great sounding analogue bass synth: the Octave Cat. Even better, the Behringer version isn't much more expensive than the mini Pro VS or UB-1. It doesn't come with the rudimentary keyboard, but I plan to play it with a 12 Step pedal anyway. If I need a keyboard synth, I'll get a polysynth such as an ASM Hydrasynth.
