First, Fender haters, move along. Nothing to see here....
I've spent a couple of hours with the new Squier 6-string Jazz bass. As someone wrote before, this may the best deal going in cheap, err, inexpensive basses.
It sounds like a good Jazz bass. Right out of the box, I tuned it and I could have gigged the bass right then and there. But I do need to add a touch of relief to the neck. There's some clanging going on, which is usually a symptom of not enough relief on the basses I play. But I have really enjoyed playing and getting used to this bass right out of the box (literally, the box. No case is supplied. Thankfully, I have an unused Gator softshell case that it fits in nicely).
A few questions for the Squier 6-string Jazz owners, if I may....
Is there a protective film on the pick guard? In some places, it appears so.
I absolutely love the strings that came on the bass. They feel a little lighter than what I'm used to, but I love the sound and feel of them. Does anyone know what they might be? Some Fender nickel strings, perhaps? The B strings sound peculiarly really good.
Yup, the fingerboard appears a little dry. My other two basses have maple necks, so I need to ask, what are other owners using to treat the slightly dry fingerboard?
And I can feel the edge of the frets on the bottom side of the fingerboard, but I have to run my fingers up and down the neck actually feel them. I don't notice this when I'm playing. My usual guitar guy is quite backed up at the moment, but he said he'd fix that if I'd bring it by and wait. He just wants to see my new $300 6-string bass....
They don't feel like actual fret sprout, which I've seen on a bass with a vengeance. And it's only on the bottom side of the neck. The frets on the top side of the fingerboard feel fine.
I have no initial complaints with the bridge or the tuners. The bridge looks decent and capable enough. When I tune a string down to bring it back up to pitch, I have to turn the tuner a lot for the string to finally move down. I think this is more of friction and interaction between the nut and the string retainer. Some pencil lead may help this. And it's solid, once I get the thing in tune.
But the thing that I miss that's on my other basses, but not on this one? Of all things, I think my first mod is going to be a Hipshot Xtender for the B string. Yup, low A, ya'll...
. That's more of an effect than actually using the low A musically. But it's cool and effective....And the tort pick guard someone put on theirs looked pretty nice. But it wouldn't take long at all the spend nearly twice the new price of this bass on cool mods. Kinda on the fence about that. For the moment, anyway....
I still do not need a 6-string bass. But what the hey, I'll play it anyway.
And all this for $300!!.......

sounds like you're having a good time with it from "right out of the box" --- that's a lot of EB you've got there --- congratulations on your new instrument!
