octamizer vs. oc2

+1

I love Talk Bass but it definitely made me into a gear snob and I say that as I stand in front of my amp so no one sees it... ;)

i wouldent say its made me a gear snob, but i diddnt know what a deep impact was before i started browsing around these parts...

anyway, ive been considering a new octave with more punch than the oc-2. the "hollowness" of its sound is turning me off lately..

I'm very interested in the Octamizer. The sound clips suggest it can provide deep sub bass tones without sounding "synthy" or you can make it sound "synthy" as well. I guess I would like something that just sounds clean and deep. I think that tone knob option on this unit is the difference maker. That and the Octave filter.

Check out the DOD Octoplus, it has a lot more heft in the middle. Tracks the same as far as Im concerned and it sounds great- they can be found for about $25 as well. The OC-2's hollowness is a 'feature' and therefor it stays on my board, but if I was going by the sound I enjoyed the most, it would be an Octoplus. (for dub stuff they almost dont even need a lowpass filter after them)

+1 to that.

Back to the Aguilar, I've been intrigued by the Octamizer for a few reasons. One, it has top mounted jacks which could save a bit of space on my crowded pedalboard. Two, the low pass filter is a nice option (very similar to what Mario and I talked about) and finally, the tone knob seems like a nice "quick and dirty" way of getting a dub sound on a gig where I just wanted to grab a pedal or two.

But that bottom design is a terrible idea for anyone with a velcro pedalboard. I was on the fence about trying one out, but now unless someone has some clips that I really dig (and the ones on Aguilar's site haven't blown me away) I don't think this is in my future.

I've been thinking about a third octaver for my synth setup to compliment the MXR Bass Octave Deluxe and 4ms Nocto Loco. This looks like a very flexible pedal and some of the sound clips on the Aguilar page are definitely cool. It doesn't seem as fat as the "EBS" side of the BOD but it definitely has some character. I'm just not sure it would be different enough from the BOD to justify it. The features are also very similar to those on the Octoplus.

Here's a shot of the Octamizer on board with some other things to give an idea of its size:

Sorry for the crappy quality; the picture was dark and I was too lazy to snap another, so I fiddled with the levels until it was clear enough to read. That black morass they are mounted on is a PT Jr. Actual Octamizer dimensions are 2 5/8" W x 5 1/2" L.

I like it quite a bit--it's very flexible sonically. I plan on having a relatively in-depth review with sights and sounds posted in a few days (I want to have a few "fresh-ear" listens in before I do so). As far as getting it on the board, it's just sittin' there right now; I'm going to have to fashion some kind of spacer to velcro it down.

Glad you liked it, I'm looking forward to your in-depth comments (although I'm a little concerned with your avatar:)
Regarding mounting the unit on a pedalboard, I also use a pedaltrain board. To mount the Octamizer (and the Tone Hammer) I replaced the battery compartment thumb screw with a short normal head screw and doubled the velcro.

Is it more advantageous to run your low pass filter after the OC-2? It makes sense, don't know why i never thought to switch them until you mentioned that. I'm using a DOD FX25 with the sensitivity turned all the way down.

Yes, for tonal and tracking purposes. But especially with the Moog LPF, if you are sweeping the cutoff with an expression pedal.

+1 I found with the OC-2 and my groove regulator that if I had clean and minus one octave both at 100% and then set the groove regulator not to open that I have a glorious fat sound with essentually perfect tracking. Supposedly the groove regulator is not the ideal compressor fow this, but I don't play dub, etc. so it works for something different.

Put a GEB-7 infront of your OC2 with the 50hz dimed and everything else off and you get mega-bass sub octave with no hollowness. Turn off the GEB-7 and you get the synthyness of the OC2 it is the best of both worlds for me anyway. It also helps my Freqbox track on a dime....But if you do that you will have two boss pedals in a row!!! (Oh the horror!) It does work pretty good though.

Any update on it?

Anybody else? I can't believe there's only one octamizer in the real world?
