Official Barefaced Bass Cab Club

Thanks, as usual, Alex. Very interesting. As good as the One10 disperses and sounds, my point was simply that it's still a 110 in a small box, and that limitation is audible (to me) when putting it head to head against a quality 12. That said, I should've stated originally that the comparison was a bedroom comparison, not in a mix or live.

Happy holidays to you and yours in the UK. Thanks, DM

I'm new to the world of Barefaced but am making up for it by reading this whole thread and a lot of the website! Amazing stuff!!

The GK MBE410 has been my cab of choice for the last few years. It shares the lightweight/high power concept with BF but audibly compresses and won't go any louder, pretty early on. Dispersion is also a bit of a mess I'm afraid.

From what I've read, something like the SuperTwin would probably blow the little GK cab away. I never use the horn as I prefer highs from a paper cone rather than a piezo (and use flats mainly). The 2x Super Compact option would be more modular, for more money. Any other suggestions?

A +1 for emailing Alex. Run all your thoughts past him and you'll get a considered opinion about what will work best for you.

I've been using 2 Super Compacts (with 5 string P bass and flats) for the last 2 months and all bands have been very complimentary about my sound. I've been told that at the same volume as my old 212 the new cabs sound bigger/fuller. My preference is to use the Thunderfunk TF750 over the TH500 but either will do nicely. I usually bring both cabs and decide if I'm using one or two on the gig. I'll usually set both up and then either plug in both or just the top cab. I like the look of 2 cabs.

I have some serious disc trouble in my lower back and 2 21lb cabs are just what the doctor ordered. I don't use the trolley as much these days either.

Chris B, any comparisons to Bergantino? Also, have you had a chance to compare the SC to the Big baby 2
I am kicking around the SC or BB but have not had a chance to hear either

Where do you typically run the tweeter on the CN212?

I also use a CN212 for pretty much everything but have been wanting to grab a smaller cab that will still do most of what the CN212 can handle on it's own. I emailed Alex to ask what he thought and he said without a doubt go for the Big Baby II for what I was looking for.

I just got it a few days ago and haven't had any chance to really mess with it yet but I'm pretty excited about it. Alex wass also curious how the volume levels compared, leaving me to think that he's fairly confident that the BB2 on it's own will be pretty close to the CN212 which just sounds crazy to me.

I'll have a few gigs in January where I'll really be able to get the BB2 into it's own element and see what it can do.
So Dave W, what were the main factors on why Alex said to go with the BB2? Like I said, I am a little unsure of not having the horn on the SC, but on the other hand, I do very little "modern" music or slapping.
Kind of one of those things where I will regret going with the "lower" model, for lack of better description.
The most modular solution that fits my style is what I am trying to achieve and deciding without trying is difficult so that is why I am so curious as to recommendations.

I've got a pair of retro two10's, a supertwin, nv610, diy sealed 610 and vertical sealed 410. Each does something better than the others. In a way, it almost sucks having so many great cabs because, it's tough to choose which one to gig with. Good problem to have.

He really didn't specify. I shot him an email with my tonal goals and what I wanted from the cab. I mentioned the cabs I was looking at and what I was using.

I mentioned wanting a similar tone to the CN212, modernish, and wanted a lot of volume and low end authority from a smaller cab. The BB2 is what I figured I wanted and he confirmed that.

I'm thinking you'd probably be able to go with either the SC or the BB2 for what you want, but I'd check with him just to be sure.

So after thinking about this, I think I need to change it up a bit as I am not looking to replicate the CN212. Maybe a pair of SC would better suit my needs, but I will check with Alex

Others will be able to tell you better than me but I'd expect more/extended low end from the BB2 due to the larger box size and more high end from tweeter vs the SC.

monsterthompson might be someone to ask, since he's owned both of those cabs (BB2 and SC).

BB2 definitely puts out great low end, in the room with just one BB2 it sounds kind of like you have PA support down there. Lest we forget, the "bigger box" that is BB2 is still only 29 pounds (26 with silver face cloth grill). In my mind, take it with a grain of salt, but the only reason to go with an SC over BB2 is if the size of the cabinet (not weight) is the most important thing, and your car or venue will just not accommodate the enclosure (which is still pretty small, but is 5% larger by enclosure space than my Aggie SL-112). I just don't think you can beat the tone, and the ability to shape the tone, of a BB2, and since this "big" is still "small", well, to me it adds up to BB2. Other opinions may differ.

.... and when the BB2 really is "too big"-- say, when you have to play on a postage stamp-- then I have the One10 for that. Two awesome cabs, that I might not ever use at the same time.

Still, I'd like to try out a Super Midget.

Hey, anyone who is genuinely curious about One10's (sorry for the departure from the topic here), consider doing the "traveling demo" thing they are getting going, try it on your gig, then send it on. The SM might be a bit big for something similar but I'd love to drive one of those before committing the $. Anyway, carry on.

I briefly had a BB2 but I sold it because the low end was a little "too big" for me. I spoke to Alex and he said he thought I should have gone for the SC anyway. He was right.

I'm now using 1 or 2 SC's and while they still have more low end than my CN212, it's more controllable.

I love my Bergs but the SC's are getting so many compliments from my bands that the Bergs have been put away for the moment.

Well, it sure sounds like the BB2 is the one you want, mikeluch. If you don't want the highs, Alex has said here (IIRC) that a BB2 with the high driver off is like a SC, only a bit fuller/deeper and perhaps a little louder too. Monsterthompson can weigh in on that fer sure. And if you want some highs, you can add them to taste. Either way, it should be a different flavor from your Bergs. The only reason to keep considering a SC would be price, which you haven't really mentioned as an issue, so if that's true, and you want to avoid the risk of getting not enough cab, then I foresee a BB2 in your 2016. Good luck, DM

Thanks guys. The price is not an issue, more so in making the right choice, particularly with the type of material that I play.
It seems like with all the great feedback, it is a no lose proposition, although Chris b's latest has me on the fence again between the BB2 and the SC

If you turn the HF driver off on the BB2 then the mids/treble sound essentially identical to the SC. The real difference is in the lows - the BB2 is deeper and tighter sounding whilst the SC has a bit more thump and a bit less depth. The SC feels more like a bass cab in the lows whilst the BB2 feels more like a really good PA system.

For most bassists the decision comes down to your treble preferences, so if you prefer newer strings, like to hear the full range of synth or fuss effects or play acoustic instruments, then the BB2 is the one. If you tune lower than low B then I'd lean towards the BB2 regardless. There's no difference in loudness.
