Official Mesa/Boogie 400,400+ Club

Update little - I found two Aquilar sl112 cabs in price of one. Mint condition so I bought both. Now I have very powerful mini setup with M3 or 400+. Beautiful, clear and powerful sound. (Mesa cabs are hard to find here in Finland. Especially powerhouse 112 or 212. Shame) Great set up in studio also. Pictures later today.

Nice - I recently picked up a M6 212 combo and love the EQ it has. I also see your little GK 112 combo, I want one of those too some day.

Just stumbled across you guys, thought I'd see if you had any opinions on 6550's vs KT88's in a 400? Its retube time, and I talked to the guys at eurotubes and they recommended the KT's, but at around $300 its not a choice I want to regret.
I've only ever heard 6L6's and 6550s, so any help would be great.

And my rig: 400 & D180 with diesel R/R cabs

I've nevere used them either, but based in popular consensus, KT's will be the way to go.
Thanks for the input.
Was doing some recording from the preamp out the other day. Had a pretty significant "sizzle" coming out of channel 1. Leads me to think part of the farting out might be in the preamp tubes. Going to swap them out first. What are they ecc83's I believe?
Still planning on going ahead with the full tube swap. Just want to make sure that there isn't an underlying problem.
Think I made up my mind to go with the KT88's also. Sounds like they're more musical with a little more headroom from what I've read.
Just wonder how close it'll get me to a strategy/prodigy sound.
Should be an improvement either way.

A month is too long for no activity here. It's also too long not to have played through my 400. Well, technically my church owns my 400 and Ampeg fridge, but I'm still responsible for care and feeding. We haven't had a show in our theater for a couple months; we are doing Phantom of the Opera so all the band equipment is put up.

I was able to pick up a M6 Carbine 212 combo and a Buster 210 combo and I am very pleased with both of them. I'd like to find a Mesa 210 to put under the Buster amp but we'll see. I'm Just glad I have my very own set of tubes again.

:D

Trebeless, what did you end up doing? I am about to re-tube. My concern is the heater current of a KT88 requires more stress on an already hot transformer. Euro tubes seems like they wont lead some one astray.

The transformers are not designed for the requirements of KT88's. I highly recommend against using them in anything but our current Strategy and Prodigy Bass amps. Thanks!!

I haven't done anything yet. Just went to running my SVT instead.
Still plan on doing the KT's but it's on the back burner (not cheap, and i have some other projects to do first) think the trouble is in the preamp tubes anyway, so I ordered a couple to try a swap in the meantime.

Fwiw, eurotubes explained that the tubes are biased so cold from mesa that running the KTs won't be a problem.

It has little to do with bias - and more about the filament current draw requirements of the KT88s. It will strain the transformers and is not recommended.
