Oh Craigslist

Nothing suspicious there!

Yeah I hate it when your CL transaction comes with a free side of a moralizing lecture. We went to this guy’s house just to buy a drum throne for my wife, he saw my (rather innocuous) band T-shirt and figured out that I was an undesirable. Before he would close the deal we had to endure his religious spiel. I could see his wife rolling her eyes and facepalming in embarrassment in the next room.

Man, now I wanna see the pics of the RV....and the Squier

It was this same bass, but not as clean.

The RV interior was like a dimly lit version of this with ripped up seats. I don't want to rag on someones home though. I grew up quite poor myself and knew a lot of fine people that lived in rough situations. The RV could have also just been a man cave or something. Or a fine place to cook meth. I preferred not to find out!

I emailed a seller about an older model Squier Standard Jazz bass in walnut. I noticed the SN had been removed so I asked him what was up with that.

This was his response,

"Hi, thanks for the email - I had honestly forgotten all about that serial number thing - I play this guy (and bass in general) infrequently enough that it totally didn’t even come to mind when posting the ad.

The bass came to me exactly as it’s pictured in the ad, and my best guess would be that the previous owner did that for reasons that he himself probably couldn’t explain very coherently. I bought the bass from a curmudgeonly older guy a few years ago, the kind of guy that basically made it pulling teeth just to get him to send me his address to come pick the bass up and hand him money for it.

Once he was satisfied that I wasn’t some sort of cyborg sent by the deep state to take his guns away and perform unholy genetic experiments on children in the basement of Domino’s Pizza, we proceeded pretty normally, but he definitely did a lot of “Sovereign Citizen” type insinuating and he had that certain sort of vibe about him that screams “of COURSE I *sanitize* my jazz bass of traceable markings and identifiers, let alone serial numbers, you think I was born yesterday? I do it the same way no matter what, just like I do with a new Glock, or just like I did with my new Nissan Pathfinder.”

This is all speculation but my money is on something like that being the case above any other possibility. The previous owner was definitely that type.
"

This hilarious and bizarre email combined with the fact that the pictures of the bass looked like they were taken in an abandoned RV just made me nope out. 🙃
Did you get it! The old standards were pretty good. Not as desirable as the vibe series. Same price though.

I'm sure it was a good bass at one time. I really liked the look of it. Walnut stain is one of my favorite body finishes. The pics of it were taken in a dimly lit, uninsulated, squalid RV and it wasn't a case queen. I would be surprised if the neck wasn't warped. The missing SN and the pics where it was taken made me think it was probably stolen.

But, since he’s in an RV, you could have had it delivered to you at home … that sounds great!

that's freaking golden. I would have bought that bass in a heartbeat
There's part of me that feels the same way. The seller is describing the seller he bought the bass from, not himself, and he sounds like he has a great sense of humor. The sketchy pic in the van would certainly give me pause, though...

I'll just say this - being poor is not an excuse for not have a clean RV in decent repair. Elbow grease is free.
